    Hi Everyone,

ProtonVPN went live yesterday (20/06/17) at 1100 GMT.

I plan to install ProtonVPN on my Windows 10 PC within the next few days to put it through its paces. I'm holding back on the installation as I am still evaluating VyprVPN and I suspect that this will need to be uninstalled first.

Unfortunately ProtonVPN didnt work for me. Downnloaded the free version through my Proton mail account. The program installs fine but it wont connect to any servers. I have no problem with other VPN services I´ve tested, all worked out of the box (NordVPN, Anonine, Kaspersky) Maybe ProtonVPN has something special that needs tweaking?

Today the ProtonVPN client updated and the VPN started working for me.
I get decent speed from the servers. I live in Sweden and when I connect to a USA server Okla speedtest gives 115 down and 12,70 up. Netflix does detect it as a VPN so you cant use it for that :) but normal surfing works nice even with a USA VPN server, only a slight delay in response, maybe a second or two.. if I use a Swedish ProtonVPN server there is no delay, of course.

Seems a bit pricey, maybe they'll rethink and do some launch special offers:cool:

    Hi Folks,

The free ProtonVPN service has, not surprisingly, been so heavily subscribed that I am on their waiting list. Still, I'm not in a hurry as VyprVPN seems pretty good. It does very well when tested at doileak.com.

I was a beta tester with protonvpn. The beta versions worked well but when they rolled out there were some bugs with the first version or two. Been running v1.0.3 for some weeks and it seems very solid now. HOWEVER, I question why protonvpn uses the same password as their email, it seems as user don't really have the choice to use a different password. I've asked protonvpn support about the password and it's been nearly 2 weeks and they haven't replied to the password question but in the past their response to support questions was very good. Is there anything odd about encryption email service setting up own vpn and then using the same passwords. It just seems odd to me. Please comment on this. thanks.

Protonmail's android app maintains a connection to their server in Switzerland as you might expect but if you monitor it long enough you might catch it making a second connection to an amazonaws server,
    ec2-54-243-133-174-compute-1.amazonaws.com.
This server address geolocates to Washington DC.

Interesting. I've seen other VPN services connect like that. Maybe an update server or o_O Is the payload interpretable?

I'm not sure, I didn't mention in that post, the reason I was watching that app was because I noticed they didn't put it on fdroid, unusual for a privacy oriented organization. I also didn't mention I did not open a protonmail account I just let the app run for two weeks without using it. It transferred 4mb of data during that period at a consistent rate, 1mb every 2-3 days, too much I think to be network connection protocol data.
I do not have the resources right now to intercept the payload or to tell how much of that data was transfered with the US based amazonaws server. I was hoping someone else might. This is the protonmail app, not to be confused with their VPN. I probably should have started a new thread about this instead of posting here.

You'd think that these folks would think twice before configuring their app to spontaneously connect with remote servers. Given their target market. Who tend toward suspicion. Firefox and Google Analytics, OK. But ProtonMail?

Yes, you would think so... and especially not US based remote servers.
