@gorhill , there is an outstanding bug in uMatrix (issue/335) that if fixed would hide placeholders of blacklisted elements. Fixing this bug would be a big improvement to uMatrix. Is fixing existing uMatrix bugs still on your agenda?

Considering that you do not use uMatrix, how do you deal with 3rd-party frames that you want to interact with (e.g., from YouTube)? If I keep the default configuration of uBlockO with the exception of enabling Medium Blocking Mode (as you've indicated you do), 3rd-party frame placeholders are hidden by default. And even if I configure uBlockO to not hide placeholders, the user is still not able to interact with them. I've always found this to be something that keeps me from relying on uBlockO as my sole extension.

A wonderful feature of uMatrix (which would be made more powerful by the fixing of issue/335) is that users can blacklist OR block elements. If a 3rd-party frame is blocked (as opposed to blacklisted), a placeholder will be shown for that frame along with a clickable link to go to that 3rd-party's site (making it a 1st-party). I find this setup to be incredibly useful. But it doesn't exist in uBlockO. So how do you deal with these situations with uBlockO being your sole extension? Do you just live with having 3rd-party frames (that you might want to interact with) hidden from you?

I uploaded two screenshots exampling what I'm talking about. The screenshots are from this webpage: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/22/apple-store-chicago-macbook-design/

When viewing the macrumors page with uMatrix's default configuration, you'll immediately notice two things: First, at the very top of the page and to the right of the article there are big empty spaces. If issue 335 was fixed, these empty spaces would be hidden (i.e., they represent blacklisted elements). Second, you'll notice the checkered square indicating the presence of a 3rd-party frame. Also, the checkered square shows the URL of the frame and a convenient button that can be clicked to go to the 3rd-party (making it a 1st-party). For me (along with many other features like cookie management, strict HTTPS, CSS control, and so forth) this makes uMatrix a more useful/capable extension than uBlockO.

When viewing the same macrumors page with uBlockO's default configuration but with "I am an advanced user" enabled along with the global blocking of 3rd-party scripts and 3rd-party frames (Medium Mode), you'll notice that the big empty spaces around the article are gone (i.e., the blocked elements are being hidden). But there is now a big empty space below the article (where the 3rd-party YouTube frame is). And there's no way to get to the YouTube page to view it as a 1st-party.
