So much for Creators' Update of the much hyped Hololens and VR technology.

This is what happens when Microsoft introduces new features in Windows without improving what's already there.

What will the next update offer? I'm glad I don't have to wait around for it.

I did buy Vive and was utterly disappointed. After I bought it I realized I am just a fool with too much money ;) I´ve maybe used it 5 or 6 hours since I bought it last November.
The quality in 360 videos, photos, movies is horrible. Its like putting a magnifying glass on a old pre LCD TV. There is some huge potential in gaming when it comes to picture quality, the demo "The Lab" is awesome. But there is just not enough games that interest people. VR is just a hype in the form it is today, much like 3D TV. An incredible expensive hype. If they cut the prize on headsets with 80-90% cut the cords and give much higher resolution so it can be used to other things that playing games maybe people will buy, but there is no way around that without a killer game or if some one like Steve Jobs comes around again, a visionary who sees what others dont and has the knowhow to sell it, it will never gain momentum. Not even the porn industry seems to succeed.

Trying to do VR with head-mounted display is doomed. Sure, you can track head motion. But there are just too many degrees of freedom. And I suspect that it's tracking inaccuracy that ruins the experience, and sickens some users.

Didnt say that, just pointed to the fact that porn has had quite big impact on this kind of technology before.

I think this hits the nail on the head. Once the novelty wears off, no-one wants to wear what amounts to a helmet all the time - especially one that isolates you from the world. This, I believe, is why 3D TVs and computer monitors have not succeeded. And for 3D glasses looking at a TV/monitor screen, it does not help the images become distorted if you are not sitting directly in front of the screen (akin to looking at a carnival mirror).

I have always said I will buy a 3D TV when the 2nd generation of 3D TVs come out that do not require any eyeglasses or headset. I suspect I will be long dead by then.
That's one of the most ridiculous, and clearly biased statements I've ever heard. If you are going to bash Microsoft for the sake of bashing Microsoft, pick something legitimate and truthful to bash them about. I sure do and there's plenty of those things going around and I will defend your right vigorously to do it! But I will also defend Microsoft or anyone else with the same vigor when there is an opportunistic bash without cause as done here.

Samsung, Sony, Apple, Google, LG, HTC and especially Facebook are the ones pushing VR technologies. Microsoft merely included support because those big companies are pushing it. And HoloLens was not created for Windows 10. It is a totally separate project and technology began 10 years ago. The latest Microsoft version is a totally standalone unit that runs an integrated W10 that costs and outlandish (IMO) $3000 too. Adding support in W10 for the PC was just a natural progression.

And for the record, adding new modules to W10 does not take away development from other modules/features. It is not like Microsoft has a development team of just 5 programmers that have to divide their time between projects . There's close to 50,000 programmers and software engineers out of the more than 120K in the entire MS workforce.

    Yeah, there you go! lol

Or wait unless Star Trek holodeck technology becomes a reality. It should only be in about 250 years! ;)

I've more or less followed VR for decades. And basically it seems hopeless, unless you have a setup that physically moves your body. As in The Lawnmower Man or Ready Player One. Because without those physical cues, your senses and brain just keep throwing errors, and you tend to not feel well. As in dizziness and nausea.

This remind me the fiasco of the old Nintendo gaming console (the one with mini-dvd), excellent tech but they released the console without interesting games; its sales were then very low.
When you push a new technology, be sure to give something really "awesome" that make it appealing.

It isn't going to happen until there's direct total-sensory brain input. Visual input alone doesn't cut it, because of the nausea when visual and somatosensory input disagree. Unless you're attached to machinery that moves your body, consistent with the visual input. And that's not practical, unless you're not moving very much. I mean, remember "Lawnmower Man"?

Yup, mirimir, you're right. It has to be the whole body 3D machinery.

The problem with VR (and 3D) as I see it is the requirement to wear special glasses/goggles. Most people don't want to. And for those who need to wear corrective eyeglasses, the experience is even less enjoyable.

I have always said I will never buy a 3D TV until the 2nd generation that does not require any glasses comes out with very positive reviews.
