This morning I was installing new windows updates. The process triggered warning after warning from Avira that an attempt to alter the registry had ben blocked. Over 50 times in all. How do I prevent this in the future when installing updates?

First time I hear that bug.
As you have the paid version, you better contact Avira Support, imo.

That's really strange as Windows updates are implemented without booting into Windows obviously to avoid the very problems you are describing... I'm stumped, it never happened to me...

Yup. I just tested it with an eicar test file. http://www.eicar.org/86-0-Intended-use.html

Created it, saved it, and it went straight to quarantine!

The good news is that when I restored it, I was given the option to add the restored file to scan exclusions. That part works. :thumb:

Hey Avira! You really need to fix this!!!

Good morning. Well I asked the guys in our support dept. and they haven't noticed any requests like your one. So we need to take an eye on it if this issue comes up again.

Any plans to fix the "interactive" detection mode in Pro?

Thanks for the info. This is a serious bug, and should be elevated to top priority for a fix ASAP!

Falling on deaf ears, I don't think it is a bug, it is just a safer way to protect the average Joe... I would also prefer full interactive mode, but I must say so far I haven't experienced any FPs of any kind.

The bug can be avoided by switching to a different antivirus ;) Of course this doesn't help if you don't want to use an alternative.

    It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Testing and switching AVs can be a hobby for some in here not for me, albeit I had several reasons in the past to change: in more than ten years at Wilders I switched AV three times from big names indeed, the first time for lack of support with a paying product, the second time I bought a very expensive license in Europe (55 Euros in 2005, CD form) which was blacklisted in Seoul where I live and lost my money, with the third company I got infected.

Avira is not perfect, but I’ve never had any real problem to call it a deal breaker, its detection is top notch, I always got unbeatable discounts for three machines, it was awarded best antimalware product of 2016 by AV Comparatives, and it is extremely light in terms of performance.

Should I switch because of the interactive business? It would be unreasonable.

In your case, it certainly makes sense to stick with Avira, and based based on an earlier comment it would seem that the lack of interactive mode is not really an issue for you. However, I have a number of PUPs install that I don't want to be quarantined, which means that it is an issue for me.

Likewise I can understand people trialling free versions not having any qualms in switching to different AVs... If I ever switch it'll be for MS Windows Defender, lately it has done better than Avira at AV Comparatives...

I'm using an extended trial of Panda Global Protection at the moment and most likely will purchase a license to it or Panda Internet Security when the trial finished.

If you restore them from quarantine, Avira will ask if you wish to add them to the scan exclusion list.

No. It's a bug. Having an option in configuration that does not work as described, is a bug. It's a misrepresentation of expected performance. All it would take to brick your PC would be one wrong false detection of a critical file. I'm glad that I take a complete disk image backup at least twice a month.
