    @WildByDesign Thank you for your help. I am still not clear though as to what exactly I should do. For example, should I go ahead and install 52.0.1 anyway first and if I do where exactly is the new directory that I need to copy over? I see the existing one in the extensions folder and I have backed it up. The existing one appeared to update when I last updated to TB45.8.0 on 8 March 2017. Appreciate your assistance.

    You're welcome. I am always happy to help whenever possible. So you had one proper update on 8 March 2017 which is interesting. I have also had several times in which TB updated and Lighting (contained within) updated successfully as well. Then there was one time in which TB updated but Lightning failed to update automatically for me. So that is when I had to manually update it. Hopefully the TB/Lightning devs are able to resolve whatever is causing this inconsistency because there are still a lot of TB and Lightning users.

    Anyway, first of all, I strongly recommend that you backup those extension folders but also backup your TB profile including calendar data just in case.

    The latest version of Lightning will always be: \Mozilla Thunderbird\distribution\extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}
    You can verify the versions within the install.rdf from inside that directory.

    The active (in use) version of Lightning will be within your TB profile: \extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}

    Generally, what is supposed to happen, is when you update TB, TB is also supposed to automatically copy the updated/distributed Lightning version from the \distribution\extensions\ folder over top of the older/existing {e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} folder within your TB profile.

    So ensure that TB is not running and that your TB profile is backed up.

    Go to your TB profile within: \extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}
    Delete all of the contents within that folder.

    Go to the distribution folder within TB install directory: \distribution\extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}
    Copy all contents from within this directory into the {e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} folder within your TB profile.

    Once that is complete, you can start TB and all should be ready and well. Please do let me know how this goes for you. :)

    @WildByDesign
    Thank you for your detained instructions. I have decided to wait a short while before having a go at manually updating to see if Mozilla sort it out at their end. TB/Lightning are working just great for me now and I don't want to risk messing anything up.

    One thing I should add. I had an issue with Lightning sometime last year when it automatically updated the extension but was not then compatible with the installed version of TB and would not display any of my info. I resolved this by reverting to the previous version of the extension manually and then selecting Off in the Check for Updates option. It was set like that when TB/Lightning both successfully updated on 8 March and still is.

    I will keep you informed as to developments and really do appreciate your help.

    You're welcome. That is a wise decision and I absolutely respect that. Email and calendar data is too important to take risks.

    I backed everything up and tried automatically updating. It successfully updated TB and Lightning without a hitch. Thanks again for your assistance.

    52.1.1 has been release today. Although I am not sure as of yet the status is for release notes or when automatic update is scheduled to begin.

    Guys/Gals, I'm not sure if this is the best thread to post this in. But anyway, you've got to have a look at this theme. It's a direct download link for a theme .xpi file which you have to go to your Add-Ons page in TB and install from file.

    Link: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=8858675

    The downloaded theme itself is created by one of the main TB theme developers. It was based upon a great theme idea called Monterail which was only working on Linux apparently. But this TB theme dev has made this work great on Windows.

    I found the link on the main design blog post: https://www.monterail.com/blog/2016/the-power-of-email-clients-why-did-we-redesign-thunderbird?
    * You can see screenshots there

    There is another developer creating multiple themes for TB, one of which is based on Monterail as well. However I believe that there is a bit more work involved to get them running and may not be in a theme .xpi format yet but I have not tested those themes. I've only tested (and continue using daily) the first link above which downloads the Monterail.xpi theme file. I'm assuming that this will at some point become default theme for TB. Great design and certainly a nice, more modern UI experience for TB.
