Yes, that looks more like it. What was being mulled over was that you would need at least three permutations of the lock/color combination. Two like the above plus one signifying the machine is unlocked but VS is running. I had suggested yellow, but someone had also suggested orange. Like a traffic light configuration, many can identify with that. Edit: what do you think, should the iconic VS shield be replaced altogether with the lock icon? That way, you can keep the VS letters.

As for me, what is most important is a colorblind consideration. I am not, but.....

~ Image Removed As Per Policy ~ These things must be done DEH-licately, my PRETTY. Besides, if I had a form of color blindness, it would make me uncomfortable if someone went out of his way to accommodate my condition to the exclusion of everything else. See what I mean? Not that simple, a lot of factors.

Ohhh...I don't know why I am buying into this, but for starters read The Americans With Disabilities Act o_O

Doesn't the ADA pertain to employment and equal accessibility in public places? Let's say it does apply to VS specifically--then, red shouldn't be used in a meaningful way in the icon. . Very bad logic but...

Just because I suggest things having to do with color in no way implies that I'm ignoring the needs of those who have a form of visual impairment. :( Not so! There is also the consideration that of all the people with color blindness, how many use VoodooShield? This is getting a little too complicated, guess I'll wait 'til Rip Van Winkle wakes up again. :)

VS (3.59) crashed this morning. It started by continually blocking Avira update and after repeatedly allowing it, it crashed. Not sure which files you need for this Dan. Surely Avira should be auto allowed.

Personally I wouldn't use OFF except in Training/Disable modes when all protection is indeed turned off. To use it when the system is protected in Smart/AlwaysOn modes is confusing.

    One possible solution:
Smart and AlwaysOn modes: Locked (Green), Protected/Unlocked (Orange)
Autopitot mode: Orange. No need to change shield after 10 minutes of system idle since nothing changes as far as I am aware.

Since Smart/AlwaysOn modes when unlocked are the same as Autopilot, then it would be best to have the same colour to indicate that the security is the same level.

Training/Disabled/install modes: Red as a warning that protection is now turned off.

One final thought. Dan is very keen on explaining VS as a computer lock and we all understand that. However to the vast majority of users, a computer lock is a physical lock that secures a laptop or a soft that prevents access to a PC (try Googling it).

It is not surprising that users do not understand the meaning of the current ON and OFF.

The tray-icon could also be changed.
Maybe a little lock-icon can be displayed in the lower-right corner if the Lock is enabled.

It could, but is it really that hard to understand VS? Personally, I think changing icons and colours only complicates things more, but that's just me.

    +1.

I like the shields, and I like the idea of colouring them as per @imuade.

OTOH, I'm still waiting for per-user GUI settings, so I can continue TRAINING while other family members don't get unnecessarily alarmed.

    Please, Dan? *puppy*:-*:-*:-*:-*

Just a suggestion Dan, but how about we discard all the fluff and get back to basics? I'm put in mind of certain elite-level sports-people who venture into show-time territory... and fail in the most important part of their jobs: keep a straight bat, bowl at the wicket and use both hands to catch the ball :) I'm sure the noble sport of Baseball has much the same mantra?

    @imuade: Ditto. :)

Honestly, I like the idea of a revamped and more modern VS system to provide more visual cues to its status. I thought it was actually in the process of happening. Actually, I should read some posts more carefully and stop being a Tower of Babble-on. Apologies if that really bothered some of you.
