Companies do not update and it is mostly MS's fault, because of forced restarts. It is already hard to update nonstop running computers, even if they are not running nonstop, but knowing, that after updating, they might restart at any time without a warning, that is a real problem, considering, it might take a long time and it might even fail, which would cost money, it is definitely not worth the risk.

That's why Windows 10 update automatically and there is no way to "block" updates. As I always updated my systems, it was not a problem to me. But I see a lot of reasons why Microsoft would like to impose this to users.

Can't dispute the importance of updating, it must be done.
But . . . This problem is mostly if not entirely microsoft's fault.

They really really want custormers to install win 10.

I really really don't want my win 7 computer to become a win 10 ad platform. Soooo, I spent hours & hours trying to determine which updates to avoid. Think how much easier they could make the update process if they wished.

The lengths to which they went to push win 10 are disgraceful.
Just one example, imho the most egregious, remember when the little red x actually started the upgrade instead of cancelling it?

I'm at the point where I don't trust microsoft at all. In light of win 10's meager adoption, microsoft might begin their push again before long. So I stay on guard.

    /end rant :)

And how many updates/patches have required another patch to fix what should never have been broken?

I haven't trusted Microsoft (or anyone for that matter) since Win1.0. DOS was nice, it didn't need patches, and most upgrades were useful.

I don't understand why W10 would be an "ad platform". If after install you disable one or two settings (Yes, it is that simple), you don't have to worry about any ad. At least, I never seen one, and I use Windows 10 for almost two years.

And, BTW, I don't agree with Microsoft tatics to force users to update to Windows 10.

Not a direct answer to your question, but . . .

Most of the good folks on this forum are very tech savvy. I'm not. I don't know what all win 10 sends back and forth to microsoft, nor why it does it, but am pretty sure that none of it helps me. Probably helps microsoft immensely, but not me. XP runs fine and safely without all that. All I know about windows I picked up over the years trying to control win xp and win 7.

Remember when the win 10 push was in full swing, there were a dozen softwares and advisors that said claimed to shut off the telemetry, but not completely. Seems be that the telemetry is almost impossible to shut off completely. Shouldn't be necessary to shut it off, and shouldn't be necessary to shut off the ads. Would have been possible to make it opt in, not opt out.

Anyway I thank you for the polite answer, and I will look into how to do that next time I am at my family member's computer that runs win 10.
And the central idea "don't be the weak link . . . " is quite right.
