My old XP box is close to death; the problem may be with the power supply. Options?

Can you elaborate more (or point me to an article) on how Google wants to manage your HDD?

And this is something else I do too, thoroughly test any new utility package.. I make sure it doesn't go blabbering on the wires, unless it is supposed to do so like a network traffic utility. All my systems must have the ability to work off-line and have full capability while off-line for extended periods of time.

Hi Keatah, first, when I said 'manage' I should have put quotes around it, meaning Googles intentions and their plans in general. Specifically that those plans don't exactly have your privacy in mind despite all the handwaving and foot stamping they do to the contrary. That includes integrating your whole life including your HDD contents into what their "products" have to offer you - like in this case, Google drive. Also I might add, I'm not only singling out Google but FB MS and others, but I believe Google has the largest reach out of them all - for now. My comment came from articles I read about Google some time ago, but anything about its reach isn't hard to find, so sure I'll mention a few things. Just did a quick search and brought up some search engine first page articles (further below).

What you said about doing stuff offline is synonymous with what I meant. I don't like the push in general of being forced to operate in the cloud and that my content is necessarily going to be stored on "cloud" HDDs as is intimated below o_O and that things are moving in the direction of being "cloud based" where your software and computer won't operate properly unless you're online. In that light that's where the "managing" of your computer and hence your personal stuff, becomes a blurred dividing line between what's theirs and what's yours. We know, for example, you leave "marks" all over your system and those are my business not MS's Googles or anyone else. When they have inroads into your system, who knows what they take advantage of.

Really? NOT if I have anything to do with it....and how convenient to discourage manufacturers to use good quality control - ummm I bet they don't mean that for their own drives though.... and who says I HAVE TO HAVE my data somewhere else? - presumably on their cloud services :thumbd:

I didn't click on this link (the title says enough) Whether the "Google futurist" is a Google spokesperson or someone else, either way it paints a chilling picture of what either Google has in mind or someone thinks they have in mind. When you read articles like this from back in 2013 you realize your HDD contents is nothing compared to this monstrous proposition. Personally I believe something else will happen before things get this far but I'm under no illusions the goal is there to do just this and more. To elaborate further than this would be outside the bounds of Wilders.
