The problem is as Mrk would point out, designing an OS that runs as well on smartphones as on laptops and PCs is a huge undertaking. Even Microsoft hasn't been able to do it. Either go big or go home. And Canonical decided to go home.

He is right, of course. Ubuntu was the first commercial desktop effort with a real chance to succeed. Not just another side effort for the sake of it. There was real meat there. But nooooooo. Mrk
Do we really need smart phones? A unified OS is sheer fantasy. The last player left is Google. Maybe their new Fuschia OS might be the IOT people have been talking about. We'll see.
