Despite Cortana returning with this AU update, there is at least one improvement, and that is how Windows Defender is being shown as loading at start.

    Hi Krusty,

I think this will be easier, for my circumstance, since I have the Pro version of Windows 10:

Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise edition
If you have either of the above versions of Windows 10, the process is still relatively simple.

    1. Launch the Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc in the run field within the start menu (click the Windows button and just start typing)
    2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search > Allow Cortana
    3. Set the option to disabled.
    4. Log off and log back in. The option would take effect across all profiles on the machine (or network) as the case may be. - See - http://www.trymodern.com/article/1091

:thumb: What ever works, Tarnak. :)

I didn't realise you had the Pro Edition.

One of the machines I maintain updated to version 1607 a few months ago while the owners were out of town with it (despite having the upgrade to 1607 hidden - errr). Since then it's been dropping wifi connections - connects for awhile, then drops and won't reconnect until a reboot. Anyone seen issues like this with 1607 - I still have all other machines on 1511 so I haven't looked into 1607 much yet

    Thanks

I didn't notice this behavior and I have got 1607 right as it was available (last July I think). It looks like the wifi driver or its software needs to be updated.

The driver was up to date so that wasn't the issue...

Found this advice on tenforums - in Device Manager find the wireless adapter and go to the power management tab - untick the "Allow Computer to Turn Off This Device To Save Power" option. No issues so far after doing this - it's been a few days now

Yup - you should NEVER allow Windows to manage your wireless Internet device. Or you won't connect online. Absolutely ONE place I don't care to save power.

It seems like a bizarre default setting to have, but I've never seen an issue with it before the update to 1607

I will revive this thread a bit ... I have noticed a recurring update of KB3150513 in Windows Update History. This update was successfully installed five times in May. What's going on?

Could it be related to Windows Defender?

I don't know. I have WD completely disabled. I'm using ESET Endpoint Security.

Ah.... good thing I have telemetry turned off.

Microsoft is eager to use Windows to spy on us.

Thanks @anon for the info. I don't have problems with telemetry data going to Microsoft.

Yes but it has telemetry embedded in it and I just shut it off. Winaero Tweaker let me do it.

Its a privacy issue. I don't like Big Brother using my personal data in ways I don't have control over. There's too much privacy being lost in our modern society.

Perhaps but thanks to telemetry is Windows less buggy than without it. Telemetry immensely helps in honing and keeping the system healthy as much as possible. I recall one expert discussion where Microsoft modelled situation how would Windows be faulty without telemetry. I cannot remember the percentage now but know that it was pretty stunning. As regards the privacy, believe me that if your person would be a target of whatever interest, they would find the way to spy you regardless on your effort to prevent it. What Microsoft collects is harmless in terms of personal privacy. It is true which is not publicly accepted though. Last but not least it's worth to say that Microsoft isn't alone doing that. There are many softwares out there phoning home and you can bet that many of them collect far more than Microsoft and handles the collected data more dishonestly than Microsoft. I don't advocate Microsoft in any way, I just didn't succumb to paranoia about Microsoft.

No it does not. If telemetry was used only for that they should/would allow users to read/review the telemetry data before being transmitted (as they did in the past when a program crashed or after a BSOD)

After release of Windows 10 MS published some info about how users are using their new OS. From that report it was clear that MS collects much more data than is needed to identify and fix possible problems.
