Have posted on their forum, but thought I'd ask here as well.

I thought I'd try the new CU4 but I find I just can't disable the self-protection module (which I had enabled) on either laptop.

Now I think I can't upgrade or uninstall, or am I missing something?

    Would the mb-clean work?

Try deactivating your license. That should disable Self Protection.

Thanks @Krusty. Faster than the forum. Indeed that does work. The self-protection module is then 'unavailable'.

But if I reactivate it is once again enabled, and cannot be switched off. Surely it should be able to be switched off?

But at least I would be able to uninstall and reinstall (not sure about that :) ) by deactivating license.

I always deactivate the license before I uninstall anyway. I always use to use REVO Uninstaller Pro for v3 removal but their new mb-clean tool works OK. With v3 .x.x I've always found that a clean install gives a better experience.

There's no problem disabling or enabling Self Protection here. Maybe time for a clean install on your machine too?

Oh, turning on "Enable self-protection module early start" seems to help with the Ransomware Protection not starting.

Maybe a clean install is in order. Or just an uninstall :)

    Thanks for your help.

That's what I advise too. Even when the final version is released, I will clean install. MB should tell users this when they release their Beta versions...less problems.

Good idea and a must because If deactivation is forgotten (or un-avoidable), the Malwarebytes' licensing server could deactivate your key then you would need to request/explanation to the Malwarebytes' Support for a license re-instatement witch is a head ache.

They also just now suggested a full uninstall / reinstall, and being unable to toggle self-protection must be a bug.

Edit: An uninstall / install allowed me to toggle self-protection. On one laptop I also did a mb-clean, on the other I didn't but will probably redo that one.

I've been logging my MBAM installs through "launch" to help ferret out all those cracks and corners where elements lie. Also useful to visually check /ProgramData and /Program Files (or /Program Files (x86)) for remnants.

If they don't come up with a solution to my license problem with not a lot of hassle. I will be uninstalling Malwarbytes for good. AND maybe that is what they want. They have 80 days to fix it.

    I had the same issue.

You have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall. Then both will be toggleable. I agree that bug was introduced in the last build.

They have updated the install instructions: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/198328-cant-disable-self-protection/#comment-1111829

Edit: As stated by others above, to be safe, especially if using mb-clean or Revo, deactivate your key and reactivate afterwards.

I have 3 installations of the latest version. I tried a complete unintsall and reinstall and it didn't matter. Since I was able to uninstall with Revo I am not worry about it for now.

Do you mean not worrying about the locked "self protection" option? I'm not concerned about it either for the moment. Before installing the latest build I unloaded MBAM from the tray and also stopped the service; that worked fine.

I have 2 life licenses which I have not been using for a couple of years and when I tried them recently they don't work with either versions of Malwarebytes, not a big issue as I'm fine as I am, but not very helpful in promoting a loyal following...

Have you contacted them? They changed the format of the license a while back. I had some trouble activating my lifetime licenses, but they were honored.

No, I haven't Victek, and I definitely should as for what I understand the latest version is a full fledged antivirus application... But on the other hand in both license receipts there is an ID, a Key, and a warning to "keep this key in a safe place for future reference..."
