I guess I'm in the minority, but I like Windows Defender. I've never had problems with it and will continue to use it. So far I have never had any sort of infection on any of my pc's while using it along with supporting softwares.

    Same here.
WD (with PUPs.reg) is exactly the pure, basic AV, to build a layered security.
ZAM, or KAR are good to combine, as cloud protection.
    Unchecky, to prevent PUPs
HMP.A to ad protection from exploits and ransomeware.

I contacted Gov Maharaj from Microsoft about the PUA 'hack' for Windows Defender, as detailed here. His response:

Exact, i use WD as a basic scanner, i don't need crappy BB/HIPS/Webfilters/AI monitoring everything i do, i have better than that, it s called SRP on hardened OS.

I tested it under Windows 10 and Windows 7 and certain known PUPs were not detected when it was not enabled but were detected when it was enabled.

The "hack" still works. Tested today on a fully patched win10-64.

    Test yourself:

PUA blocking also has some conditions:

Win 10 Pro 64 bit all up to date, Windows Defender, Comodo Firewall in proactive mode and Voodooshield. I think I'm in pretty good shape.

There isn't anything much to configure. How often do you need to check for updates or run scans.

I agree the first time WD is opened in a session it opens quick but if opened again there is a delay but I don't bother opening WD all day long.

Yes, but it's one of those irksome little things, like the 3.99TB bug on disk cleanup after a mass update. Am I alone in thinking the Creators Build is going to cure whatever ails ya?

If I simply MUST look at Defender, I use Settings, it opens immediately, every time. What is guest's secret?

ah ok , in this situation, it also take 5-10sec. , but not the 1st time.

A new version of Windows Defender for Windows 8.1 has been released as part of KB4012219 (Preview of Monthly Rollup).

From the file information: Msascui.exe 4.10.209.0

Would have been nice if the test was actually done on Windows 10 with Windows Defender. Since I don't think many organizations actually bother to test on that OS.

The most recent test was for Oct 2016 (they only made 3 test so far)
    https://www.av-test.org/en/antiviru...-2016/microsoft-windows-defender-4.10-164047/

Though, if Microsoft did well on Windows 7(as shown in Martin_C's links) it makes sense to think it should have been better on Windows 10.

(Creator's Update, 1703 RTM) You no longer can double click the icon to open it. Problem "solved".

Was not WD supposed to support ATP on Home/Pro since CU? I can not see it on Home though. Pro has this entry set to 0, not sure, if it has to be enabled manually, like PUP? Any ideas?

    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Advanced Threat Protection\Status" /v "Onboarding " /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us...g-windows-defender-advanced-threat-protection

EDIT: It seems, that diagnostic service (telemetry) has to be enabled, in order for it to work.

My only gripe with Windows Defender is that it is actually very heavy on my machine (CPU), otherwise I would be using it.
