Recently took advantage of a good deal, on I believe Newegg, and purchased ESET Smart Security. I installed the software and it appears to be performing as it should. My problem is of my own making, as the password I chose that allows me to make changes etc. I have forgot. And now when I attempt to make a change I am asked for the password which I can no longer provide. I first thought that I would simply uninstall the program and then reinstall it but I cannot do this because it ask for the password. Has anyone experienced anything like this with ESET Smart Security? If so what is the solution? Thought I would ask before contacting ESET again. As always I will appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance.

No ........ but I assume most users don't password protect their settings.

Best to post your problem on the Eset Smart Security forum. Marcos should be able to answer this promptly.

Unless you can remember the pw I think you are SOL. Even as far as uninstalling the program. I think the pw protects it from being uninstalled.

If you proceed be prepared to bork your OS. Take an image & back up all your data, keys & software.

You might just might be able to uninstall not reinstall. Imo you'll never be able to reinstall with complete control as before pw. Either through a straight uninstall in Safe Mode no networking which I doubt will work.

Or search for all Eset registry locations on your pc through multiple search & registry/analysis removal programs. Don't make ANY changes! Copy ALL the locations. Boot to a Linux LiveCD at least 1 of dozens of LiveCDs will work on your pc. Then delete all the entries manually. Probably borking your OS. If you're lucky maybe one of many methods to restore the MBR or startup will work. After that if your system boots I'd then use Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Portable from Tweaking.com & use ALL the repair options [except the malware related ones] in Safe Mode. IF this works install another [NOT Eset] AV or IS.

If this works I wouldn't trust this OS as being fixed for at least 3 months. Make more frequent backups for these 3 mythical months.

Unless you can live with the limited access you have now. If so I wouldn't do any of the above.

I can live with the limited access but when the subscription runs out in December I will still be left with ESET Smart Security on my system and no way to remove it. Sad thing is the password was one that I would always remember except if I really needed it. I am getting to old for this.

Awesome! But doesn't that defeat the purpose of a pw?

    Good find, Thankful !

I don't think so. From what I understood from that ESET article you have to get in contact with ESET and provide your Username, Password and/or License key that was sent to you upon purchase.

In addition the administrator password is needed for using the unlock tool.
It shouldn't be so easy for an attacker or other users to remove the password :) (must contact the Support, must know the ESET-issued Username and Password/License key, the Administrator password,...)

The owner can forget the password after some time, so it's good to have a possibility to remove the password.

AFAIR its stored in registry. in case of registry tree protection (eset settings) it may possible from another windows and mounting/editing the hive.

If the password is stored in the registry might it be accessed by way of regedit? I have in the past used regedit but it was on a Windows XP computer. My issue is that ESET Smart Security is installed on my new laptop with Windows 10. And, I just don't feel as adventurous with Windows 10 as I did with XP. Anyway, I will eventually address the issue but right now I have some personal matters that is requiring my attention.

read again please, not such simple
you dont have access, eset wont let you in or make changes. and you have no pass for eset so no way for you.

mount and edit from another windows (winpe possible), i told you for reason.

in case that not registry, then its in the settings/date folder of eset
    c:\users\...\eset
    or c:\programdata\

dont know exactly, dont use any AV for years now
