@hawki What V/R/build were you trying to backup? Were you at the latest v/r/build? Did you defer any updates?

    Hi Emmjay

Not sure I understand what you mean by V/R.

Just the latest WIN 10 AU 64X.

    Have not deferred any Updates.

I gave up and restarted. PC is now totally borked :-(

On restart after login I got a black screen with a small white dialogue asking to select language. Then NADA. Just a black screen with an empty tool bar that only has a non functioning Start and search button and time that keeps blinking on and off.

There still is more there but it's hidden and non-functional. I have been trying CyberReason Ransomefree and did get an error message that it had encountered an error and was disabled.

One would think that Windows Updates are configured so that if a PC shuts down during the update process it would still work.

Shame on me -- no image. My only resort now is Acronis or a reset with a Windows Restore USB drive. PC appears to be so messed up dunno if either will work.

OK, so you have the latest ...
    • 1607 -- the "Anniversary Update," build 14393
Well what you describe sounds somewhat dire. Totally borked, no Safe Mode. Let us know if you have any success with Acronis or Windows Repair.

Acronis brought my PC back from the dead. BUT there may be a problem with my WIN Updates. Checking for Updates says no Updates Available." However, Update History says "No Updates have been installed yet." 00 -- Looking at "Uninstall Updates" shows only a total of 9 updates installed with the latest being the Flash update of earlier this week. "Today's update" was not installed.

The backup I restored was the one that was made while today's update was downloading or installing. I had feared that after the restoration I would start-up into the same updating loop. That did not happen, but I have wound up with an unsettling status. Wondering whether the Windows History is accurate. Kinda afraid to uninstall all Updates that show, but that may be the right, though risky, course to take.

During my restore I only restored my main partition and did not restore the UEFI or Recovery Drives since I saw no need for that. But I don't believe that would account for my dubious Update Status -- Weird.

It would be a good idea to run Windows Update Troubleshooter. It will asses the status and if it finds errors it will let you know what they are. You then have the choice to let it try to fix them. Check 'installed updates' rather than 'history'. Sometimes history will show nothing or just a few updates, whereas 'installed' shows the actual install base.
