    Hi:

I do not know why but when I tried installing any linux (ex. mint, peppermint, etc.) they all show messages I am offline and I have not connection eventhough its a direct ethernt connection and ask for wireless connection?

In windows its all ok. So why linux distros do not recognixe my wired connections while windows does?

So for me to use internet on linux, I have to use wifi connection. I have updated all drivers in linux but no use.

    Anyone else having similar issue?

My system is a asus pc with intel chipset and intel based network driver.

The starnge thing was this same pc was fine before latest distros using wired connections but and peppermint now with linux 18 and peppermint 7 nolonger direct connections work.

During my research I found out that linux has issues with intel lan drivers since its a proprietary driver. Also it has a "unknown.unknown" driver. So I clicked on using processor microcode firmware for intel cpu from intel-microcode (properetary) recommended option seems to have fixed it for now.

    Glad you're sorted.

As someone who's used Linux for almost 20yrs I'm amazed how far Linux has come. Linux only has a few things to overcome to become the monster M$ fears. But these things are costly or copyrighted or hard to impossible.

Yes, this is a good analysis. It's a bit like: Linux; so near, so far. The fact that M$ actually fears it is heart warming though.

Wonder how many years M$ will hang on to the BS of W10 being the last version of Windows.

In 10 years or so M$ OS will basically be a Linux OS distinguished only by a Windows desktop environment.

If M$ current secret in house Linux isn't as far along as ReactOS. Then it wouldn't surprise for M$ to buy it.

Speaking of ReactOS, this project is running since almost 20 years (1998 AFAIK), and they released version 0.4.4 a few days ago. (http://www.reactos.org/project-news/reactos-044-released)
    One of the new features:
Wait, they just added basic (to say the least) printing ability after 20 years?

"....ReactOS is not a Linux-based system and it shares none of the UNIX architecture. The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on a Windows system...."

I'm hugely surprised an under funded operation like this has gotten half as far in 20 years.

when I installed kubuntu on my sisters pc, it would not recognize the network driver either. the green light on the network card never came on. I then found I had to disconnect the network cable for a while and even try that a few times . it would then start working. have to do this every time the computer is shut down or restarted. I was able to get her new printer working with the help of wilders members.

did you check under additional drivers to see any propitiatory drivers or unknowns? That may fix your sister's issue.

I love the peppermint 7 distro, but linux has a few cons for me.

    1. Printer install is a headache since non of auto drivers comes with it works with my samsung laser. Had to manual download and use terminal and reading alot to get it up and going.
    2. The network wired card issue
    3. No working android emulator I could find to work. ( I wished i could use NOX and others from windows on linux)
    4. No cool games
    5. No download managers like IDM
    6. constant research on how to use terminals to install certain things not found in software manager.
    7. WINE does not allow to run lots of windows stuffs.
    8. linux sometimes locks and can cause issues with external HDDs or USBs. (locked one of my HDDs that would not work outside linux. had to go to alot to get it unlocked and formatted to be able to be read in windows and others)

I was able to find the right HP drivers for my sisters. I let her try mint because I use that on my older laptop but she is not a computer person and so does not like anything new or different. guess I thought with all the updates it would eventually get the network card right. hers is also hardwired.

Does your network card light come on if you shut down and turn back on?

I am not sure kubuntu has that feature but will look a bit later. I did some updates and 7 were critical with all the other and when it got down to the last 7 , got a failed message

This surprises me. I've tried many distros in the past years and none of them had problems to recognize the Intel NIC on my Asus mainboard (nor other Intel NICs I had used in previous computers).

FWIW, this Arch wiki page provides some good info.

you see in my snapshot, my intel NIC is UNKNOWN and had to use the recommended ones suggested for the network card to work.

I found that setting in kubuntu and it was already set as yours is now. I ran the same distro on my dell with intel and it works fine.
