No according to vlk there wont be 2 engines there would be a technology exchange from avg and avast so it will affect both products.Yet there is a lot of things under the pipeline that hasn't surfaced.

    NEW: AVG Antivirus BETA
    « on: Today at 06:31:19 PM »

    Hi beta testers,
today we got something special for you. As you probably noticed AVAST recently acquired AVG and today we release the very first beta version of the new AVG Antivirus.
I hope you don't mind that I post it here on AVAST forum, please give it a try and let us know your opinion.

It's based on the same engine as Avast, with some AVG specific functionality (Zen, Behavior analysis called "Software Analyzer", Data Safe)

  4. Question

I have AVAST installed on some PC's of older relatives. I have AVAST installed in Aggressive Hardened mode. Some of them got new PC's (usually old laptops of their own kids or old gaming PC's of their grandchildren). To AVAST's credit I have not had any problem calls in the last years. I have re-imaged/updated a refurbished PC (running Win 7), had installed all user software and just installed new Avast.

I found out that DEEPSCREEN was (probably) replaced by CYBER CAPTURE. To my surprise I also noticed a HIPS sensitivity setting. Now I am not planning to increase the sensitivity, just wondering what it does. Does it throw pop-ups or does it block silently? Does it follow the notification settings of CYBER CAPTURE or SCAN?

Is the HIPS a plain HIPS or is it based on AVG's behavioral blocker. Is the HIPS 'context sensitive'? In that case it would make sense to enable Reputation Service and Cyber Capture? When any one knows please answer, I have promised to return a PC tonight and want to install Avast in the most monkey proof and easy to use settings.

    Thanks in advance

    Kees

Its best to run avast! HIPS in the current version on defaults if you dont want to deal with alerts. It may throw up a few ocassionally.Last time i tested it was in v8 where it was pretty good about classifying what's not trusted and what's unknown.

Also the current version doesn't run the AVG IDP.It will be a fully functional one when avast 2017 is out.But this will be more of AVG IDP not real user dependency its just gonna give you 2 options.Fix automatically and Ignore which of course fixing will be default action.

Its more of stern alert than warning just like what avg idp gives.

This may change because in avast they never ask for actions they just fix it automatically as opposed to avg which does.

    Thanks,
    TI

Their HIPS appears before AVG acquisition. Therefore I assume it's not based on AVG bb.

Yes not atleast in the current version. But AVG IDP will be there in 2017 version and all the gold nuggets from AVG will help Avast to finally make a proactive component watching out for bad actions taking place.Like if the file is visiting a blacklisted url.Avast will block the URL and alert the user about the file doing something fishy. This is the way it is working in the AVG beta for now which of course doesn't seem to have any avg signatures more like a Avast with AVG IDP but under AVG brand name.

I know people aren't a big of yt tests here but just as a demonstration.Would like to link a video from rejz showing IDP in action:

    Thanks,
    TI

I haven't watched the video. But I will assume his statement here is related.

    https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=194282.msg1354567#msg1354567
"Btw, have just completed testing Software Analyzer against several Ransomware and it blocked all samples by behavior alone, except Petya and Dircrypt which got through. IDP seems to be VERY capable beast."

  10. Thanks for the 1.5 line extract (saves me 1.5 hour watching the testvideo) :thumb: (also thx to @Rezjor for the time spend) :thumb:

An anti-ramsonware module would be nice too. They told it would be implemented some months ago, but now nobody speaks about it anymore.

There is no such thing as anti-ransom.Its a marketing trick that's all.Something like will never work perfectly until ransomware continue to evolve.

Isn't that like saying antiviruses/antimalware don't exist cause malware keeps evolving?

Nope! For example: malwarebytes anti-ransom hardly ever works they are only able to stop generic varients of locky with it.Antiransom doesnt exist in my opinion. Not in a av product.Anti-ransom isn't evolving while AV is.

As for the AV argument I have already explained that in another thread. In my view,BB and such modules can be replaced with right cloud detection modules.
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/comodo-internet-security-10-x-thread.390856/page-2

And this thread isn't for the discussion of how good or bad AV's are.I think the forum search button provides enough to prove AV is still effective but with innovation.HIPS/BB are the last line of protection and normal user don't know how to operate them and find it confusing.

Antivirus has to evolve. It has been evolving and it will be evolving forever. To evolve you need to invest in it, and no company invests in something they consider dead. To be involved in the creation and development of new technologies and revolutionary approaches to combat malware and fighting cybercriminals is one of those secret ingredients.

Just because a file isn't detected on virustotal doesn't mean the product doesn't block it.
