Out of curiosity, why do you want to replace Untangle?

The interface is pretty archaic and some of the more crucial features for home use are either deprecated by Untangle or require payment. For example the web filtering is deprecated and unmaintained. For me thats a must have as I have several people online in my house hold including small children.

Ok, if you want to go completely free Untangle really lack in useful features.
I mean, Clam AV, Web filter, shoot me...

But then again, 50$ a year for the full pack to home users is very cheap.
Only alternative with all the bells ans whistles is one of the Sophos, but it is sooo much simpler to set up and run Untangle IMO.

Its not even about paying. The fact is the web filtering in Untangle is deprecated and that is a must have feature.

How about taking a crack at Sophos XG Home, pfSense and ClearOS?

For web filtering, in Sophos, you can activate dual-engine scanning in the web filtering section. For pfSense, you may need to configure the squid3 package (and throw in Snort for good measure). I think for ClearOS, it has a free package for web content filtering.

Ive tried Sophos. Wont install on my machine. Im running a Lenovo M93P Tiny machine with 8Gb of RAM, 250Gb SSD, and an add on USB 3.0 1GB NIC.

Havent tried PFSense or ClearOS. ClearOS seems to be a beta test for their company unless you shell out cash. Im not interesting in donating my resources to beta test for that company to turn around and sell it for monetary gain.

I have not used the paid web filter in Untangle, is that also useless you mean?
Would be good to know before I enable that at any costumers ;)

Paid web filter is the only way it works.

ClearOS works with my add on NIC, SimpleWall does not.

I just paid for Untangle UTM for home and have access to all paid options including the webfilter that isnt deprecated.

Another one worth looking at: www.opnsense.org (yes, opnsense, not opensense) It's a fork of pfSense, fewer add-ons, but cleaner interface and (I think) easier to use. Good performance on a modest box (dual core Atom, 2 GB RAM). Version 17.1.2 addresses issues with realtek nics, so a broad range of motherboards should now be suitable.
