DiskCryptor website has been silent (DNS not found) since January 16 or 17th. I wonder if this is the end of the project. Consider the following: (1) Application hasn't been updated for 3+ years, and the developer had been silent on the user forums for as long. (2) A user was acting as the website maintainer, but the last website update was in December, 2015. (3) In October/November 2016, the website SSL certificate expired, and was not renewed. I've been using DC to encrypt a partition on my laptop for 5 years. Has been flawless. Regrettably, it might be time to look for a replacement - maybe VeraCrypt. Any other suggestions?
If you're running Windows on a laptop with TPM, for many scenarios, Bitlocker is a good choice, because it doesn't require the entry of a long strong password every time. And given you're already "trusting" MS, seems to me a small stretch to add Bitlocker to the equation. Jetico has a good reputation, though obviously proprietary elements and they might get strong-armed. Otherwise, I'd go for Veracrypt because of the audit.
No fan of M$ OS, but DeBoetie makes a point beyond reasonable refute really. If a person is trusting the M$ OS then BitLocker is merely another application of that same trust. If you are worried about BitLocker having a backdoor, and yet you are not worried about Windows during the time it is a "hot" running OS that is an illogical worry. They are either both safe and reliable, or both the opposite. You will have to decide, but trust me, those two are package deals with whatever you determine for yourselves about said TRUST issue. If however you have an adversary looking at you and M$ is running, then I say good luck. Just my opinion, but its an educated one from many of forensic examinations.
Update: DiskCryptor site is back online, but still with an expired SSL certificate. Not a strong confidence builder, IMHO. In the interim, I dropped DC and went with VeraCrypt. Perfect. Thanks to all for your input!
