Does this new free version also have a small local database of malware definitions like the former one?
    Anyone knows?

Started having bad memory leaks while downloading with utorrent. Changed client to deluge and still memory was eventually running out, that's when I removed bitdefender free and the issue was resolved.

The issue only seemed to occur with an active download. Did not occur if the torrent was stopped.
This is on a 32bit windows 10 pro install. Cannot confirm for 64bit machines since I do not run torrent clients on them.

It has a bigger database like the paid version, also between every update you have protection by the cloud.

Ok. But it is cloud based like the old version. Cloud is main and database is secondary?

There is a (old) comment about disabling the webshield:

I use bitdefender free with voodooshield pro. Man this combo is a keeper. Bitdefender caughs almost everything and voodooshield doesnt need todo anything in my test. Only the pup detections from bitdefender is bad, its like there is no pup detection at all. but for rough malware it caughs like everything i trow into it.

Bd Paid is the same, I don't think BD is to concerned with PUP's. I cant remember the last time it picked up a PUP and I've been BD user for many years.

Bitdefender does detect some PUPs, but is one of the worst performing antivirus when it comes to detecting them. Some of the antiviruses using BD signatures, do even worse than BD itself at detecting PUPs.

If you don't confirm registration mail, BD-free stops protecting, after 30 days.
