    yeap, when Gnome 3 popped up there was already an alternative, instead of Unity/Cinnamon/Mate.
    But maybe that's the curse of Linux on Desktop, continuous fragmentation.

    A certain amount of 'fragmentation' is desirable IMHO. Without it, we would all be running the same desktop and find ourselves in pretty much the same situation as Windows users. The same reasoning goes for the distros themselves: as much as I love and use Ubuntu and CentOS, I wouldn't like my choice being limited to Canonical or RedHat products and feel much more free being able to multiboot between these and various Arch and Slackware distros, not to mention live distros.
