We've just had a bad storm and my leaky roof has claimed my main laptop. It had small spots of water on it (while turned off) so I never thought too much about it. Unfortunately it won't power up under battery or AC. Is it dead?

Santa gave me a dead $1000 laptop. **** Santa!

If it's under warranty, try the manufacturer. If the motherboard is fried (sounds like the case), you're better off buying a new one. Wouldn't hurt to try the HDD on another computer if the data is important to you.

I can imagine how you feel... By your description you must have left the display monitor open. If I were you I'd use a hair dryer and carefully try to get rid of the humidity. It could be high humidity that stops the machine from starting. It happened to me with a glass of water inadvertently tipped over the keyboard... But maybe I was just lucky...

Nup. Past warranty, and I doubt they would cover "acts of God" anyway. There isn't much on the SSD and what there was / is is all backed up, so that isn't an issue.
Yeah, the laptop was open and I found a light spray on the keyboard. There must of been more than I suspected. I'll try drying it but I'm not hopeful.

Have you turned the laptop upside down with the lid open (sort of a wigwam shape) and removed the battery?

It may help to prevent further damage. and help it dry out hopefully.

According this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPeITOz2_YM (it has swearing) from Louis Rossman (who does motherboard repair for living) the motherboard will need to bo be cleaned, or you will have problems in time. Near the end of the video he suggests going to a cheap store and buying some alcohol and a toothbrush to clean it, as being better than nothing.

Yep. I had it like that immediately on finding the keys damp. It's currently a foot or so away from my small portable heater sitting on its end. The heater has a thermostat so it's not constantly blowing hot air. I'll rotate it over the next few hours.
Thanks Roger. As a last resort I may try just about anything. Alcohol would help remove moisture for sure, and it's making me less miserable too. ;)

I think this guy missed that the rice may help remove moisture before the damage is done. No, of course it won't help once corrosion has started.

He uses rice in the video and shows that it's doing nothing. It certainly wouldn't hurt to use rice, but most likely it won't help either.

Well, I haven't submerged the lappy in rice anyway.

USA still the best. But barely.
My condolences on your lose. I do suggest removing the HDD/SSD asap.

Best advice if you suspect water damage is to forget about trying to power it up, and instead remove the power cable and battery ASAP to limit the damage. Trying to power it up won't do it any good if you're shorting it - it'll just increase the already high chance of component failure.

Turn the laptop in a way that facilitates drainage, and give it a good chance to dry - at least a day - and try to resist the temptation to test if your machine still works.

If you're competent with hardware and can reassemble a laptop, then open it up and give the parts a wipe down. People use distilled water, isopropyl alcohol, or a mix of the two to get rid of any residue leftover from spills (even rainwater will leave residue). I've had no problems with alcohol wipes (isopropyl alcohol) but some think this is too strong.

You are just a Grinch! It may have ruined your Christmas but Santa had nothing to do with this.

That's what home owners or renter's insurance is for.

RJKe is right. The first thing you do is remove all power, turn the unit upside down, remove all access covers and removable drives, RAM, and other devices, blast a fan on it and leave it for a couple days. The rice (or better yet, desiccant) trick will work to absorb moisture too, but a fan will drive drying air throughout the device.

If it were me I'd get the leaking roof fixed first, prevention better than cure:thumb:

    1. The roof has been leaking in a different part of the house for years but the real estate haven't fixed it.
    2. It was an extraordinary downpour - over 3 inches in the first hour (* measured by my weather station which got smashed by the hail. I suspect there was more than that though because I doubt my weather station would have been able to measure it all due to the design of the rain gauge, and I doubt the hail was measured at all).
    3. The power was off and the house was dark, so it wasn't obvious.
    4. As mentioned, I only noticed sprinkles on the keyboard and of course I moved the machine and removed the battery as soon as I did see water.
I had the machine drying since but it will not power up so I'm almost sure it's dead but I will take it to a local repair shop and get them to check it for me.

Here's the machine I'm thinking of replacing the laptop with, kept in a different part of the house of course - http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/desktops/hp-510-p159a-desktop.html

    Or possibly one these two:
I intend to connect it to my Pioneer surround sound system, which is connected to my HDTV.
Gees, why didn't I think of that?! Thanks for the tip!

Can anyone tell me if I replace the HDD on the new machine with my SSD from the deceased laptop, would that void the warranty?

    Thanks.

If there are no warranty stickers which be damaged if you open the computer, then I don't think it will matter, as you could always put the original drive back in, if you need to get it fixed under warranty.
