F-Secure has a perpetual beta program, which gives you release level features in packages they're either testing or messing around with. For example, "FS Protection" is a beta that gives you licenses for 10 computers that one PC can centrally manage. Think of it as commercial level support for families. The AV itself is release level, but the central management is beta.

As Firecat mentioned, a LOT of ISPs and Banks give the software out for free.

I agree with you that if it's not discounted, it won't stand a chance with most people, though.

Perpetual beta meaning the program is in a constant state of beta. However, they refresh your license each time as long as you're actively participating.
