Bill , may i ask you a silly question ?
do you keep your ups always on ? or do you turn off for example in the night or when you don't use your pc for 1 or 2 days?

The silly question is the one not asked.

Mine are always on. The only time I have turned them off is when going on vacation for a couple weeks.

It is important to note most electronics these days don't really power off completely, they just go into standby mode. This is exactly what happens to PCs, monitors, TVs, home theater audio equipment and more. The ATX Form Factor standard requires all PC power supplies to supply +5Vsb standby power to several points across your motherboard whenever the computer is shutdown. The only time the computer is really and totally off is when the power supply is unplugged from the wall, or the master power switch on the back of the supply is set to off - if it has such a switch.

The front panel power button on your computer uses that +5Vsb voltage to "wake" the computer. If you can wiggle your mouse or press a key on your keyboard, they use that standby power.

Anything that has a remote control is really just in standby mode when turned off. So to ensure they are protected from excessive power anomalies (and to keep the batteries charged), it is best to keep the UPS turned on too. They really draw just a tiny bit of power once the batteries are charged.

FTR, I have several UPS in the house. I live in Tornado Alley so severe weather is not uncommon. We also have a lot of stupid squirrels that for some reason have failed to learn to let go of one wire before grabbing the other wire when they are up on the poles. So whenever they become crispy critters, it takes about an hour before the power company makes it out to replace the fuse.

So I have an UPS on all my computers, my big screen TV and home theater system, my garage door opener, and even one in the bedroom for the electric blanket and weather station/alarm clock! ;)

Again excellent advice here from Bill. Please stand to correct me on this if I'm doing it wrong, but where I live, when the power is likely to be "dodgy" ie likely storms, and I have to go out for a good while, or away for the day or longer then I'll do these 3 things in this order :

1/ turn UPS off from its button on the front panel
    2/ unplug from the wall
3/ unplug the UPS battery itself by pulling the plug on the back of the unit itself (hope that makes sense)

I've always done this. When I come back I turn things on in reverse. This way, it is supposed to have less drain/wear and tear on the battery. Can't remember if I saw that in the manual or APC told me on the phone.

I live in Nebraska in an old house in a 100+ year old established neighborhood. There are not many places in the US with less stable power.

There is no harm in taking those steps, but I sure would not bother - except maybe when going on a long vacation. And even then, I see no purpose for step #3. That is generally only needed when transporting the UPS.

Lead acid batteries are very robust devices too - capable of absorbing severe punishment. Except for a direct lightning strike (which are very rare), I don't see how those steps will save any wear and tear on them either.
When simply shutdown, yes. If you unplug the PC's power supply from the wall, or flip the power supply's master power switch on the back (if it has one) to the off position, then there is no current save what the CMOS battery is providing to the CMOS circuit.

    Earth .... occasionally
That is a crucial point there .
Power cycling and cold start-ups will stress any electronic device and increase the long-term " grind" on the system .

Constant shifts from cold to steady operating temperature is plain bad news , for individual components and even for their solder joints .
I know there is the eco question regarding leaving stuff in stand-by mode , but taking the long view which is worse -
using a few watts per hours in stand-by or sending the device to an early grave , in a land-fill site ?

If you have to the necessary tools to open the UPS case, you can replace the batteries.

APC will not release a video. It would be some user with lots of time on his hands.

Well, I cannot answer that. You will have to find someone or someplace that has one and take a look, or contact APC directly. Sorry.

You get instructions with the replacement batteries (two in that unit).

I don't believe that APC told you that.

APC has always had replaceable batteries which they are happy to sell to you.

Look at the screenshots, APC shows the battery replacement is...

    APCRBC113

The "How to change the batteries pdf" is at:
    http://www.apc.com/salestools/JHSH-7ENFZG/JHSH-7ENFZG_R0_EN.pdf
As I said before, a comprehensive set of instructions comes with the replacement batteries.

Not true! If you had read through this thread from the start before posting, you would have seen and understand there is a BIG difference between "replaceable" batteries and "user-replaceable" batteries.

There are many UPS from APC and other makers that don't support user-replaceable batteries. That does not mean those UPS must be replaced when the batteries die. Nor does it mean the user must send the UPS to an APC service center for battery replacement - even though that is what APC recommends. A tech savvy user with the proper tools can still replace the batteries.

they told me i should send to service to replace
but maybe it's easy to change them ,i guess it 's not user-replaceable batteries , in short made to be changed quicly by an user

@mantra - I have already told you all I can several times over starting with my post #19 on page 1.

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, I have no doubts any local electronics technician can do it for you. You (or the tech) can buy the replacement batteries from Battery Mart or whoever has the best prices (factoring in shipping) that day. Having it done locally will surely be less expensive than sending the entire UPS to a service center. Your local tech will have the necessary tool to open the case, know-how and confidence to strap and replace the batteries correctly, and of course, is then liable for any damage.
