Is the Free Security Suite 2017 a new version that is available here:
    https://www.avira.com/

My Help / About Free Antivirus shows product version 15.0.23.58
My Avira Connect version is 1.2.76.20506

On the downloaded .exe the Properties / Details shows
    Product Name: Avira Connect
    Product version: 1.2.76.27124

I can't recommend Avira to anyone anymore.
    I replaced it with Avast.

So you've been in IT for 15 years and have been using Avira for 10 years free as you are not entitled to support at the moment, and after all the help you've got so far you say you are not going to recommend Avira anymore? Well I think you should realize that people don't work for nothing, and if you want to be critical you should at least support the company before putting forward what you don't like... I always thought Avira should not have a free version, it is just not worth it...

Hi. Thanks for posting the update notices. Does the Avira Launcher update itself or am I supposed to be downloading and updating it on my own?

On my 2 Win 10 machines the launcher (which is now called 'Avira connect') updated on its own. My Vista machine hasn't updated yet...

The Avira Launcher will stay on the previous update level for the discontinued operating systems XP and Vista. No further features will be added.

Good to know, and I realize Vista has now been dropped by Chrome as well, all things must pass...

Why? Seriously? I bought the paid version and reverted to essentially the Free version, just to support the development of a great product. I don't need all the bloat that accompanies the Pro and Suite style of products. I have tried them all, and I cannot find a better AV than Avira, for my use. It consistently ranks in the top tier, usually with 100% detection rate on the AV Comparatives website.

I think that Bitdefender is the only alternative I would consider, but their free version um, rivals a Hoover vacuum cleaner o_O

I agree, Avira has had a crescendo in performance in the last 3 years which is remarkable, but I'll have to disagree with you about the bloat of Avira Pro... There are options that can be installed if one wishes, as far as I know they are not installed by default.

    What about systray icon?

Systray icon belongs to Avira Connect (aka Avira Launcher), not to Avira Antivirus. ;)

The bloat in Avira Pro that I was referring to is the Web Protection and Email protection, that gets installed by default with the Pro installer. They are considered Pro "features". I don't want or need either. So I just un-install them and run Pro without them. Same as the free version, essentially.

I use various select browser plugins and anti-exploit software to provide web protection. I want my AV to be just that, an AV.

What if you disable/remove launcher, does Avira Antivirus show new icon?

    You can't do that anymore.

Avira is still one formidable opponent in the AV industry. They have shown lot of potential in the last few tests and cannot be ignored from the current market.

    Thanks,
    TI
