this is exactly what happened few weeks ago with the romanian branch of the dutch ING Bank. Following a fire extinguishing exercise in their data center, the whole system failed, causing an almost full day of complete interrupt of business: no ATM's, no cards payments, no internet banking. this one was an absolutely first incident of this kind for the banking system.
