    As usual my Vista machine (ultimate 32 bit) after 12 hours was still looking for updates... KB3185911 managed to trigger the updates within 15 minutes, thanks again Roger... (see post #393) http://wu.krelay.de/en/ This might help people who have Win 7 updates problems as well.

    I'll reiterate basically what has already been said and encourage anyone with update issues on Win 7 to make sure you have the rollups installed. The June rollup was superseded by the July rollup, so you only need the big May rollup, and July and August rollups. Install the April 2015 servicing stack update KB3020369 first if it's not already installed. If you're concerned with telemetry updates being included, my understanding is that those don't come into play unless you opt-in the customer experience improvement program. I installed those rollups with an older Win 7 install, and the update issues disappeared, I think after the June rollup. I did a fresh Win 7 install recently and installed the rollups before anything else, and again, no problems with Winupdate after that, and they cut way down on the amount of updates left to get up to date on a fresh install.

    Shutting down the update service and manually installing KB3185911 worked for me on W7-64 (without any cumulative updates installed). After restarting, all updates showed within 5 min.

    I read your post about doing another fresh install in the bork tuesday thread. That's good to hear. Maybe the new MS update policy comes with a caveat, but those rollups were worth it to me...

    If you're concerned about the telemetry updates, installing the big May rollup is not necessary. Installing the April 2015 servicing stack updates and the July rollup fixes the update check and then you can normally install the rest of the updates you might still need.

    I couldn't remember for sure if it was the May or June (now July) that fixed it, but thought it was the July rollup that did it for me, which apparently that is the case. Perhaps on an older install the big May rollup isn't much benefit to some. It helps out on a fresh install though.

    I just installed the listed updates for Windows 7 after doing an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. After rebooting, it took just 5 minutes for Windows Update to find updates.

    The steps outlined here work for me in both Windows 7 and Vista. There are a lot of updates to download - 12 for Windows 7, and 6 for Vista, but there is a script file provided to install then all (which needs to right click on an Run as administrator). Using this approach, you can launch Windows Update and start checking for updates as soon as you reboot - there's no need to wait ten minutes.

    When I installed these updates on a clean install of Windows 7 two days ago, the time from running the script to to Windows Update finding updates was just 11 minutes.

    @roger_m

    The Vista one you linked to is the one that works for me for Vista machines. One thing I noted is that I after I had installed those updates, rebooted, turned wifi back and updates back on ..no luck. (I had waited 10 minutes before turning things back on.

    So I turned off wifi and updates, rebooted again and waited.

    Turned updates and wifi back on and after 5-10 mins 70 updates were there.

    Sometimes a reboot is the answer to all problems !!!

    @stapp I've never disabled my network connection. What I do is configure Windows Update to never check for updates, reboot and then install the updates using the script on the website - you need to right click on it and select Run as administrator.

    After installing the updates and rebooting, I've always been able to open WU and check for updates right away without any problems, on both Vsta and Windows 7.

    The issue I mentioned only applied to Vista roger.

    I find turning wifi/ethernet connection off helps machine to try and get its act together, and concentrate on what it is supposed to be doing :D

    Yes. I advise it is actually needed, otherwise Windows Update service goes around and around endlessly. The rollup contains the last version of WU Client.
