Did chkdsk /f (good for general maintenance in any case)
SAS stopped during the first run thereafter, completed the second run, problem is still there

 

• Only chkdsk without repairing don't help anyone in anyway.
• Don't recommend this never, if is used SSD disk! It may destroy the disk permanently.

 

Adding the /f flag to chkdsk will make it repair any problems found.
You can (and should) use chkdsk on SSDs too. They can get errors just like regular hard drives which should be fixed. Running chkdsk will not harm an SSD. Neither will defragging a SSD either. But, it is pointless to defrag a SSD.

Excuse me, if usually /f or -f means "forced", then in this case it mean "find" and /r or /R means "Recover" or "Repair".
And remember forever - SSD drive is not possible to defrag!
SSD drive already have its own repair system and it don't allow in any way to this HDD repair tool.

As with Krusty this will be my last post here too. But what you have read at the Windows forum is not true. You can run chkdsk to repair SSDs and you can defrag them as well. Due to the way SSDs work it is pointless to defrag them, but it can be done.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

 

Back on topic, I did not feel like re-installing SAS (yes, I did install it on the machine) but this time I wanted the portable SAS version on a USB stick.

Surprise, surprise, the downloaded exe from the SAS website was an installer although I clicked on the portable version button! So, I uninstalled the existing installed version, installed the new download, copied the new installation on a USB stick and uninstalled the new installation.

Running the portable SAS version from the USB stick was without any stoppages so far, but since the stoppages were acting up inconsistently, I can't be positive yet that the problem is solved, I will know that in a week or two, wish me luck!

Edit: I discovered that other people have the same stoppage problem and found the following advisory posted several times by admins over at the SAS forum

Try check-marking these three options under the Troubleshooting section of the Help and Information section of SUPERAntispyware:
Disable Kernel Direct File Access
Disable Kernel Direct Registry Access
Disable Direct Disk Access

The app says 'Only disable these options if instructed to by customer support'. The advisory therefore appears to be a work around. Hope SAS produces a proper fix in due time.

OK thanks for the news on the latest update however.....

What's the general concensus on SAS lately. I mean is it still relatively reliable as an alternative second opinion scanner?

This program was a real jewel for me on XP in finding some "traces" of something that was left behind AFTER conducting a full AV sweep with various scanners for that purpose but seemed to lose audience with the introduction of Windows 8, I dunno, maybe 7 too?

 

The detection rate is still really bad, and it falls way behind Zemana and MBAM for example. However, there's no harm using as a second opinion scanner, as although the dection rates are not so good, it doesn't seem to have any issues with false positives.

On opening the free version of SAS for the first time in a fortnight my default browser (Edge) opened to a SAS marketing page. The same happened on another machine.

Bye bye SAS. I didn't like your marketing ads while updating the definitions, but sure, fair enough, I'm using the free version. That does not give you the right to open my browsers trying to flog off your sub-par program when ever you like.

 

Why not? They gotta earn a living, right?

SAS have tried nag screens in the past. I hope this isn't the start of a trend.
