The offline installer can be downloaded from Softpedia and is 219 megabytes.

Thanks, but no thanks. I thought the whole point of a cloud based AV was that you didn't have to download a huge installer anymore.

I thought the point of a cloud based AV was to keep the majority of the threat identification database off of the local machine; and while I would agree 219mb is on the large side for an offline installer it's just a one time download.

Avast! is NOT a cloud based program....It has its offline db which has been there for years only the new features and abilities are cloud based

That point has nothing to do with cloud AVs

    Lol
The installer contains all the modules (more than 10, file cleaner, VPN... ) you only need 2 file and Web shield.

Yes, that's what I meant. I assumed the installer of AV's are always so big because of the signature database. Back in the days, this wasn't the case, AV's used to be downloads of 10 to 50 MB's.

Well, this explains it, my bad. But it's confusing, because what exactly makes it lightweight then? And BTW, is it possible to disable real time scanning?

Then there is not a single cloud AV since all of them have offline db

Yes. I used Webroot previously, which is largely cloud based, and it also has a local signature cache to enable offline scanning. It seems to me that without some local signatures an AV would be unable to ID malware if the internet connection was lost.

And the "fun" [sarcastic] continues: Avast causes Blue Screen after Windows 10 Anniversary Update
    https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=189403.0

I have not personally experienced this, as I don't have any Win10 systems here.

    Please note reply #61 https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=189403.msg1329994#msg1329994

"the issue really seems to occur only on the last generation of Intel CPUs.[*] Previous generations of Intel Core CPUs are fine. Moreover, it did not show up during the testing on the Win 10 preview builds.

We are already working on a fix and hopefully, we are going to deliver it via an emergency update. I will keep you posted.

Thank you also for your patience. We are having a hard time with this update as well."

    ===============================

[*] this issue occurs only on Intel Skylake CPUs when VT-x instructions are enabled in the BIOS. As a workaround, you can temporarily disable the VT-x in BIOS.

Not only blame avast for this issue (BSOD), MS is also responsible for not testing their anniversary update on different soft & hardware

In my opinion, it's the other way around.
AV vendors have to make there software compatible with Windows, which is actually not the case, with several AVs.

Judging from a decade of issues, AVs are a major factor for problems, while protection is always there weak point.

Yes, as a practical matter the AV vendors have to make their products compatible not the other way around. I wonder though how much time they had to work with the release build before it became generally available? The general release came out only about two weeks after the Insider Fast Ring build, plus there was a final update right beforehand.

Not only that, but then you have to deal with end users who shoehorn AVs that aren't compatible with their version of windows, like Bitdefender Free (non beta).

Maybe,... but the issue didn't occur when they were testing avast on the windows 10 insider program , then comes the anniversary update and suddenly its al different ... but it was only affecting users with a CPU skylake and VT-x enabled in their bios.

Sorry, after initially clicking "abort connection" for an hour or so (it kept popping up), later when I realized they were windows updates, I allowed them and no longer have the error. When I get home, I can see if the "show last alert window" option will show what the prompt was, but the laptop has since been shut down.

I was suspicious based on the server Avast was showing that it was windows updates, and when I went to windows updates I noticed some updates were listed with the status bar stuck half way. When I allowed them in Avast, then the win update completed.

This is the latest Win 10 home-64bit "Anniversary update" edition that just came out a week or so ago. Latest beta of Avast, with only the file & web shields installed, hardened mode aggressive enabled.

Edit: "Show last pop-up" doesnt show anything, probably since the computer had been shut down. The update that was being blocked was "Microsoft Visional C++ 2010 Redistributed Package (KB2467173)"

Your opinion is that avast is heavy? I got Avast free installed on my laptop (only file-shield) and don't notice anything.
