The TPM is hardware so i doubt they could do much to alter it outside of an 'Un'official firmware alteration to the TPM or drive which would likely leave them open for a huge lawsuit from everyone. As for the nagging being over, I doubt it..I think that it's more likely they will just come out with a new version that 'aids' users in paying for the upgrade and keeping the rest of the nags...Hopefully I'll be wrong though, looking forward to not needing to be so picky with updates if I know I'm NOT ready not upgrade already!

Right, we all trust Microsoft. They would never trick their customers or screw with Win 7 & 8 users. :argh: :argh:

Since, you can't offically upgrade to Windows 10 for free anymore (although, thankfully it can unoficially be done), Microsoft have no reason to show the upgrade prompts anymore.

I hope your right. :) I haven't updated my Win 7 computer in 3+ months. I started looking for updates an hour ago, it's still looking. We'll see what kind of update show up. Fingers crossed ~ No nagware will show. ;)

Agreed, Windows 7 updates have become far more problematic over the past 12 months and often need a bit of troubleshooting.

Also I had a batch of PCs that had Windows 7 installed from DigitalRiver ISOs all stop getting Windows Updates at the same time. Tried the usual troubleshooting (including manually installing updates) but could never fix it. I read on a forum that Microsoft may have cancelled the cryptographic keys for the later DigitalRiver ISOs (to stop people distributing them), but I've not seen any outcry about this so not sure how widespread or true this is.

I won't post anymore about it here, don't want to veer further off topic, but there are reports that the TPM can already be compromised by malware.
Don't know if those are theoretical or practical, just mention it because microsoft is so determined to get everyone running win 10.
They have already used some pretty questionable tactics, imho.

Not anymore. They were until the 12 month free upgrade period expired.

TPM specs are written by TCG (Trusted Computing Group), of which Microsoft is a member. The group is primarily hardware vendors. There is no need to do anything unofficially as this group makes the rules.

The vendor of a TPM-enabled system has complete control over what software does and does not run on the owner's system. In some cases the vendor may choose to grant permission to the owner to configure hardware they have legally purchased. This does include the possibility of an operating system (OS), whether chosen by the user or preinstalled on the hardware before purchase, that refuses to load unsigned or unlicensed software , but those restrictions would have to be enforced by the operating system and not by the TCG technology.

There is legitimate concern that OS vendors could use these capabilities to restrict what software would load under their OS (hurting small software companies or open source/shareware/freeware providers, and causing vendor lock-in for some data formats), and Microsoft stated they have already began restricting what software they will allow to run on Windows. It started with W8 PCs. Recently Microsoft informed all hardware vendors that TPM 2.0 will be a prerequisite for W10 PCs.

If no one is buying the $119.00 commercial product, they'll give it away for free. Microsoft is going to learn if that people wouldn't upgrade during a limited time offer, they're not going to shell out money to buy it at cost.

If people are going to have to buy it, they might as well buy it pre-installed on a new PC. Good luck on getting it sold through the Microsoft Store or through retailers.

I have recently upgraded to Win 10 but I want to hold off on Anniversary Update until I've seen feedback on this forum and elsewhere that it doesn't bork anything.

I have Win 10 Pro and have Group Policy Configure Automatic Updates set to '2 - Notify for download and notify for install'.

Is this sufficient or do I need to also do one of the following:
    1. http://www.infoworld.com/article/30...tes-without-breaking-your-machine-part-2.html or
    2. try Windows Update Mini Tool or
    3. simply disable Windows Update service
till it seems safe to proceed?

Once its pushed down Microsoft servers tomorrow, it will install like a service pack update.

When it finishes installing upon reboot, the Anniversary Edition should be the new Windows 10.

Just disable Windows Update Service; WIN + R services.msc

In services.msc set Windows Update Service to Disabled, then reboot system

    Hi topo,
The Intel update (shown as important in Windows Updates) failed on my system with Win 7 64-bit.
    I have Intel HD Graphics 4600, cpu - Intel i5-4570, mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H S1150 Z87.
Maybe it would be good to continue the discussion about this particular Intel update on that other thread; I am not sure what is wise though.

"Given the massive testing and repeated refinement that brought us Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you’d think the rollout would proceed with few debilitating problems. But you’d be wrong. From common installation problems to minor irritants to significant data destruction, reports of problems are mounting up.

You should consider dodging the update until Microsoft irons out the worst difficulties".

Windows 10 is essentially beta. There is no "final" version and will never be one.

Microsoft hasn't given much thought to what Windows should be - since they're leaving the desktop metaphor behind.

If that's how you view your PC, Windows 10 isn't what you want out of it.

My exeprience with Windows 10 indicates otherwise. Windows 10 Anniversary Update is very fast and problem free, on the one laptop I've upgrade so far.

My son has had Win 10 for more than 6 months on a fast machine, and he is the type who generally does not comment about OSs. When I asked him what was the difference with the machine's native Win 8.1 and his current Win 10 he said speed. I'm also quite happy about having upgraded first and updated to the anniversary version.

I'm not a programmer nor a savvy user, but I know that any software is always work in progress that can be improved unless a total redesign is required. XP to Vista was a total change, and Win 7 was basically a service pack for Vista. From Win 7 to Win 8 again was a total change... Win 8, 8.1, 10, 10 anniversary are the same family so far, and Win 10 is the state of the art.

I've upgraded five desktop computers yesterday, all without a hitch. I expect to double those numbers today, and already in the process of doing a tablet before I head off to bed.

Minor annoyance, mainly with some customization being reverted to original states. Then you have System restore disabled by the upgrade.

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/windows-10-anniversary-update.387581/page-3#post-2607160

..again minor annoyances, and over-all I'm very pleased.

For such “common installation problems”, based on all the desktop-PCs and laptops, Netbooks and tablets I've upgraded. From Windows 7, 8.x to Windows 10 initial release. Windows 10 initial to November release. Windows November to this Anniversary upgrade.

I have only seen one machine fail to upgrade, Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 initial release. This only happened because of the darn AVG Free product this person had installed. It would go right up to 99% on the last stage and finally roll-back.

It's either I'm doing something right when upgrading, or people sharing their hard-luck stories are doing something wrong.

I think Windows 10 over-all happens to be the best Windows system ever made. I really liked Windows 7, but I love Windows 10. I don't fancy or even have a need for Cortana, however maybe will change later on. For now I disabled Cortana via registry. I use local account for Windows login. I don't p2p my Microsoft Windows updates. I dialed telemetry way back to basic. Also put a stop to it asking for feedback from me, and removed Get Office Store-App and so forth. All very little minor annoyances too.

I personally considered Windows 10 November release to be out of beta phase. It just works so smoothly even on older hardware. Lot of work went into Windows 10, under the hood, and many just don't even have an idea to just how so.

I personally didn't think the Microsoft Store would offer me much, but I love my iBird app, and Bejeweled game. Now with Edge extensions support, AdBlock Plus.

This Anniversary upgrade really impressed me. There is a performance gain yet again, really noticeable on slower-end machines.

    That's my 2cents worth. :p

Just wanted to mention that the Tablet upgrade from Windows 10 November to Anniversary looks like a complete success.

I'm going to try this again. I have a simple question: For the last 3+ months ALL my Win 7 updates went to hidden, I didn't want to be bothered by the updates. Now if I take all those updates out of hidden, search again for updates, will I get anything from nagware Windows 10?

I hope so.:D Last week I forgot to take the updates out of the hidden file when I started to scan for updates. Today I took all updates out of the hidden file and it been looking for updates for the past 2 hours. I had about 40 updates in the hidden file so it probably will take some time to complete looking.

I think that one of those updates, that you have hidden solves the problem with long time searching for updates. Only after installing that update, you should get more realistic update times.
