As far as I know mail in a browser (e.g Gmail) is checked by Web Protection. If one has email programs such as Outlook, then Mail Protection might be another layer... Furthermore Gmail has its own antivirus which will advise users of infected files...

Thank you. Hmm, I'm sorry I'm a bit confused here. I just what to now do I need this "Mail Protection" if I don't use a standalone email program and look at my mails in my browser. Thank you for your patience.
With "^" I mean that bold text is the answer = Does "Mail Protection" work when I check mail in a browser? Or "Mail Protection" covers only standalone email programs -------------- The articles from Avira's Knowledge Base are for information only.
fyi: There are 2 options = 1) Just activate/deactivate the Mail Protection (via Control Center). 2) Uninstall the Mail Protection" module (via "Change/Modify" option) http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/964 The screenshot is from my configuration.
Thank you. I didn't deactivate Web Protection. But it's not activated in Avira. How can I fix it, please? I reinstalled Avira free but of no avail.
With Avira free you don't get Mail Protection and Web Protection, these are only available with Avira Pro...
Oh, thank you. So I've made unnecessary fuss about "Web Protection" and "Mail Protection". These boxes in Avira's installer cheated me. At least I've managed to coup with closed umbrella when "Windows Firewall" is unchecked. Thank you very much to all!
With all due respect, I did not forget anything. I have read the whitepapers previously and concluded that those techniques still rely on malware signatures and/or blacklisting url's. Maybe with some decent heuristics to assist as well to identify suspicious files. I give Avira credit for deploying a very effective defense against "known" and recently discovered malware. The cloud protection combined with frequent updates to the resident AV database, while it is in the top ranks, is not enough to combat emerging threats. I am referring to "behavior based" zero-day anti-exploit defense. With the rise of ransomware exploits these days, it is now a next-generation arms race against malware. https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/20...-the-rise/incidents-of-ransomware-on-the-rise https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2016/03/23/investigating-exploit-kits/ That's why I would also recommend one of the following as another layer of protection (1) Microsoft EMET, (2) Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit (MBAE), or (3) HitmanPro.Alert. http://www.howtogeek.com/223228/use...o-help-protect-your-pc-from-zero-day-attacks/ MBAE Free is sort of a no-brainer in this category. EMET is complicated and HitmanPro.Alert (HMPA)is more comprehensive, but not free. MBAE is truly set and forget, no signatures to update, so light you will not even notice it is running in the background. A couple of years ago, Malwarebytes hired a security researcher for two months to test MBAE Free against as many exploit kits as he could find in the wild, with only MBAE Free for protection. He was not able to infect any of his machines. Hopefully MBAE has kept up with the smart malware creators MBAE: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/topic/136424-frequently-asked-questions/#entry846342 HMPA: http://www.surfright.nl/en/alert Some other AV companies are beginning to incorporate this technology into their products. Obviously there is no 100% safety net and some may be happy with only resident AV protection. But, the only true defense against these types of attacks is a good offline system backup. Guess what? If your backup is online, and accessible from your OS, it can be encrypted too! Then you are truly SOL!!!
My Avira Pro auto-updated to version 15.0.17.273 just now, better very late than never... No launcher here, although quite frankly I don't care, as long as detection is tops...
Avira free real time, updated, is enough. MBAE has bugs that could prevent legitimate programs from running.
I agree...Avira + MBAM is enough....Avira local signatures are very good as usual and now the APC is just a icing on the cake.APC is a beast in my opinion.Detects almost everything missed by their local DB.
Off topic: Running MBAE paid since the very first days. No problems for me. MBAE Known Issues & Conflicts (Last updated: May 10, 2016 / MBAE version: 1.08.1.1196)

Here Avira free, file is being blocked for download by ABS, but if you have no ABS the file is downloaded, when extract file avira finds it.
Once again Avira finds a way to annoy one. The Avia Loader and the ability or should I say lack of to stop it from installing on once machine has caused me to once again say by by Avira. I have now gone to using Windows Defender. I have a suggestion for Avira stop this crap. Always, Wildman
I do not understand why Avira (FREE) has that stupid launcher. Also be advised if one decides to uninstall Avira (FREE) there are still plenty of left over items and apparently Avira no longer has a uninstaller download to get rid of them, even Revo does not get them all. A regedit (find Avira) and delete is all I could come up with. Always, Wildman
