I'm using AVIRA-PRO 15.0.17.273, the latest I could get in German language.

I'm using it without email protection, that does not work at all, with SSL.
Without web filter, that slows down browsing,
and without the annoying lauchner, that did not come back, since I removed it with GEEK Uninstaller.

I just use the AV, witch is one of the best in detection, especially when it comes to malware campaigns that target German users.

    Downside:
There are rare false positives, from time to time, I can live with.
AVIRA flags any crack, keygen and cheat, as trojan, even if there is no malicious component in it. (Kaspersky does better in this respect)

My Avira Pro auto-updated to version 15.0.17.273 this evening. I still don't have the launcher. When I double click on my tray icon, it goes directly to the product interface.

Avira Free updated finally for me last night to 15.0.17.273 and suddenly the Launcher was there as well. I installed Iobit Uninstaller 5,3 free and after two tries it did the trick, no Launcher! Gone.

Thank you Wilders for the tip!

    Regards,
    Joakim

No need to install an Uninstaller. Just open task manager, then startup, then disable the launcher. Works for me.

from what i am being told the launcher will soon reinstall after every new version update if you have it removed. and now that they know about the "workaround" im sure they will workaround it and fix it being able to be disabled. i hear it is coming in the pro version as well but the person i spoke with could not tell me when.

personally if you are using the free version i dont see what people have to complain about. honestly they are giving you one of THE BEST detection wise solutions for FREE. so personally and many will hate me for saying this but i think it should be okay in the free version. look at what some other companies do with their free versions and the huge pop up ads or the constant nags or the huge amount of bloat of some (think avast). however for paid users who actually support the work they do they should be able to choose a custom install and NOT have to install the launcher if they do not want to. like anon i own lic's actually i have a total of 15 lic's and they are all between 3 and 6 year ones.

I agree. Avira is not bloated, even with the launcher. I am a refugee from Avast, and I find Avira is a breath of fresh air :)

I have the Avira Pro version, but I have disabled the mail and web protection. Why? I feel that any AV's web protection only slows down my browser[with HTTP scans], and I wish to protect with web browser extensions, or external anti-exploit measures alone [i.e., HitmanPro.Alert, or MBAE]. And I use TLS security on my mail server, so AV mail protection is useless for me. The launcher? I have studied it with Resource Monitor and it is very light on system resources. I leave it alone :)

The Launcher DID download and installed again this morning, your info zfactor was indeed correct. Tried Boesdad´s tip about disabling it instead and it seems to work.

As for the startup banner and Launcher´s "be or not to be" in a free product I fully accept they want it there for selling purposes. Avira is one of the top players in the field and having their protection for free is great, and as long as they offer it for free I choose to use that option, startup banner and launcher or not.

But, if there is a way to get rid of at least the Launcher I prefer to try it. I have no need for it. I find it very convenient being able to quickly hover the pure Avira Free Antivirus icon in the icon tray to get the info I need and I am well aware of what Avira offers me when it comes to products otherwise.

    Regards,
    Joakim

My experience with AV mail protection, is that you must let your AV function as a "proxy" between your local email program and your email server. I have not used this since switching to SSL/TLS email access. The secure transport makes this proxy difficult.

To answer your question, when using web based email, you are only going to need a hardened browser. You are not actually downloading the emails to your PC. But if you decide to download any attachments, the same rules apply to anything you might download from the net.

I noticed you run MBAE (among other things), so your browser is shielded from exploits. You should be fine as far as reading email. Regarding attachments, you may want to have a look at HitmanPro.Alert as an alternative to MBAE. For example, say you download an attachment that is a MS Word .doc that is a malicious exploit, especially if it automatically launches the app. You may be protected if you have MBAE Premium, or HitmanPro.Alert, which shield your office apps as well as your browser from zero day exploits that your AV does not know about.

Resident AV protection only works if the AV signatures contain the malware variant. Therefore they do not protect from zero day exploit kits. Layered defense is recommended now. It would be nice if Avira offered some exploit protection options like MBAE or HitmanPro.Alert, but it doesn't yet.

I chose Avira for it's outstanding detection abilities, but also realize that only a good layered defense is acceptable today, along with a good system backup plan :)

Thank you very much. Does "Mail Protection" work when I check mail in a browser? Or "Mail Protection" covers only standalone email programs?
