Hey Froggy, do you know if/when Reflect will be able to create and restore images of external usb drives?

I've been probing but haven't heard anything particular from the Macrium insiders (I know they're considering it).

I haven't tested yet but they may be able to do that now with the external UFDs that allow themselves to be discovered as LOCAL drives rather than REMOVABLE ones. It's a mixed bag with the most modern ones at the moment and there's usually nothing in the advertising that states such... only by word of mouth do you really learn that information.

Yeah, I know they're considering it. They told me that when I opened my ticket. I thought you might have some insider special person information that none of us regular people get. Why that was never just in there by default is beyond me. I miss RDR but I do like IFL/W. If they ever implement it I might have to test it out.

I mentioned above that some UFDs (USB Flash Disk) allowed themselves to be discovered by Windows as FIXED disks rather than REMOVABLE, but that it was almost impossible from the accompanying literature to determine that fact. One of those (which I found in my drawer) is the "Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0." When inserted, the device is seen by Windows as a FIXED (not removable) storage device.

Reflect is very happy to image this device without issue. Sandisk started doing this to some of their UFD lines to originally allow them to be used by the W8.1 introduced "Windows to Go" feature... I have no idea whether it has continued with all their new lines or not... you just can't tell from any available literature how they act.

I originally obtained this device based on extensive speed testing done by many on-line test sites... it was one of the fastest and what I really needed was speed in my application.

I got a free version of Shadow Defender and was trying it out and kept running in to the same problem. After using SD and applying the changes during any given time frame, the next time I went to do a Macrium backup I would get this error message: "MFT Corrupt – Error code 6 = Run chkdsk /r"

I'm not real sure why one would need both but thought I'd give SD a whirl. When I do run chkdsk it stays at 10% for close to two hours. I just do a hard reset and move on and restore to a previous MR6 backup.

Is this a common problem with SD and MR? It seems others use both and have no problems. When not using SD everything seems fine. But I have not tried a chkdsk to see if it hangs either. Thanks.

    dagrev,

I suggest checking your HD with the HD manufacturer's diagnostic software. You could have bad sectors.

Could you explain in more detail what do you mean? What operation are you doing? Commit all? Do you use "Commit all" frequently?

    Will do Brian. Thanks.

Robin- Yes, commit all is what I have done the two or three times I have used it. As far a frequency goes, I wold run SD for a few hours and then commit the changes (which were minimal and just normal PC usage).

"Commit all" has sometimes caused problems for me - but not the kind of problems you described. I rarely use that function now. Also, are you using a "free version" of SD? There is no free version of SD. Check you downloaded it from the official site, http://www.shadowdefender.com/index.html.

I had a couple folders excluded but the rest was committed in trying it out. It was a special offer via SharewareOnSale.

That's not a problem... but the keys will be registered to you (and your email).

Upgrading from version 5 to 6.1

I am very late with questions I may have about upgrading, I know... The thread is a bit long to read all of it, so please forgive my questions.

I have Macrium Reflect Pro version 5 on Win 7 - 64 bit, C-drive is an SSD, D-drive an HDD.
I guess it is time to upgrade (long overdue, ough). I got a 20 % discount offer from Macrium (assuming it is also for upgrading), I have to do it quickly.
I only do full manually backup-images.

    1.
I guess that I should now go with the Home Edition. Right?

    2.
I have now PE 5. If I upgrade, should I go with PE 10 ?
For now I have no desire to upgrade this computer to Windows 10. Should I nevertheless go with PE 10 ?

    I may have future questions.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Fanj

Good move on the upgrade. To answer your questions.

    1. Yes Home edition is right. Only difference to the other editions is support.

    2. I have win 7x64, and I use PE 5.0 Could try PE 10 and see if it's any better. Can always rebuild and switch.

Also once you build the PE, you might want to try the install in the boot menu option.

Also once you get it together, give the incrementals a try, and then and RDR restore. You won't believe the speed.

    Pete

I am thinking of installing Macrium trial version.
Whats the size of the PE it downloads & Macrium installer? My system is Win 10 64.
Is there offline installer? There is online installer but couldn't find offline installer.
And should I go with default install settings or any suggestions?

    Thanks Pete !

I bought the upgrade. Wow, the discount(s) worked great! There was a 50 % discount for upgrading and on top of that the 20 % discount offer that I received, worked too; nice!
I had a 4-licence Family Pack, it is now a 4-licence Household pack. Only thing I have to figure out which new licence belongs to which old licence. I have no idea; not easy to figure that out with my bad eyes; maybe I have to use my old Beyond Compare program to "see" (ough) whether there is anything that points me to the right one...

I remember me that you helped me long ago with Reflect (your help, and that from others too, has always been very much appreciated!!).
Yes, I have the boot menu for version 5. I always use that when I restore a back-up image.

The upgrading/installation may have to wait. I have now other things to do (and got invitation to test a complete other program).
But if you, or anyone else, have any tips for the upgrade process, they are more than welcome!!!

    Thanks!!

In 5.0 go to help update license key, and it will tell which license you have there. Make note of it when you upgrade.

Mine is not the trial version but rather the free version. There is a comparison of the free and paid versions on their site. I have mine set up to boot to the boot menu in Windows and also boot up from the memory stick and be able to restore from my backup image which in on a USB 3 256gig stick.

I tried to create a bootable USB stick following this blog entry using the default settings: https://blog.macrium.com/2016/04/26/techie-tuesday-troubleshooting-usb-rescue-media/ and while the creation was successful according to Macrium, it does not work for me to boot up the same pc. The error message I get is "missing operating system" . In fact at this point the system freezes and only a hard reboot works. I was just testing this as an alternative to a cd rescue disk, so big deal for me at this stage but would be nice I can get it to work.

    beethoven,

Open Disk Management and look at the UFD. Is the partition Active? If not, set it Active. Does that work, or not?
