Yes, we don't use a proxy. Nothing has changed except workgroup policy on my PC but it doesn't affect access to networks. Moreover Opera and IE11 both work, just Edge doesn't do.

I've found the Weather application pinned to Start is not updating now. This has happened often in the past and opening the application usually starts the Live Tile updating again. I'm not going to open the application this time because I want to see if it will start updating on its own, also SAS has detected tracking cookies after opening these "Apps" in the past, and yes I know they aren't a security risk but Win10 is already collecting more than enough data without throwing tracking cookies at me.

I only have two "Live Tiles" pinned to start, the other being News because I'm not at all interested in Windows "Apps". News is still updating but Weather is not for some reason.

Anyone else noticed something like this.

It's being firewalled. Weather app uses one or two other system processes to pull weather updates to its live tile.

Take a look at Explorer.exe connections first.

Thanks. I should have mentioned it was the same on two machines.

After a restart both machines are now updating the Weather application on their own again.

Did I simply install Windows 10 over my existing Windows 7, or did I do I clean install (which is what I wanted to do)?

Following the advice here http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/, I used the Windows 10 media creation tool from Microsoft to burn Windows 10 installation files to a dvd. Then I installed Windows 10 onto the laptop via that dvd and selected the "Custom" option when prompted at the “Which type of installation do you want?” screen. It is my understanding selecting the “Custom” option ensures a clean install versus an upgrade install.

The Windows 10 installation on my laptop went very smoothly. However, I just noticed that I now have a "Windows.old" folder on my laptop C drive containing a ton of stuff from my old Windows 7 installation. That is why I am wondering whether or not it was a clean install. It seems to me a clean install would mean everything from the Windows 7 installation would be wiped clean, and therefore there should be no Window.old folder.

I did a quick google search a few minutes ago and read that Windows 10 creates the Window.old folder for upgrade installations and for clean installations when the clean installations are occurring on the same partition containing the previous version of Windows. So does that mean there's no difference between an upgrade installation and clean installation if the same partition is being used?

Could use some knowledgeable advice here from my fellow geeks.

@Doodler You can delete the windows.old folder by running Disk Cleanup. An upgrade install reatains all of your installed software, whereas a clean install doesn't.

Weather stopped updating again on both machines but as expected, opening the application gets the Live Tile updating as it should. Me thinks M$ just want us to use their crappy "Apps".

Are you saying that you believe an upgrade install occurred on my system even though I wanted a clean install and chose "Custom" for that very purpose?

No, you have done a clean install.

This to be expected.. I can easily reproduce the same experiences. If you don't allow secure HTTP connections from Explorer.exe to the weather service, the live weather tile will eventually stop updating. ~ The weather app itself doesn't stay running when you exit out of its screen.

The workaround, as you know it.. is to manually start the weather app by clicking on the weather title. This will allow it to work for awhile.

Windows will automatically delete the Windows.old folder to free up space after a month.

What you missed after selecting custom install was deleting ALL partitions on the target disk to get a truly clean install. Robin A. linked you to a tutorial which, if followed in detail, will get you a truly clean install.

Those who simply doing an upgrade misses out on having UEFI advantages like faster start-up, and more security ..etc

Windows 8 machines already w/UEFI. Upgrading Windows 8, 8.1 is okay.

Not all Windows 7 machines support UEFI, but for systems that do.. better to boot Windows 10 DVD/USB with UEFI booting and install Windows 10 that way.

    Yes. The main point is:

On the first screen, press <SHIFT> + F10 to open the command prompt then type:
    diskpart
    select disk 0
    clean
    exit

Not sure that is essential and it's not part of the tutorial. I've seen this recommended before but have done clean installs without it on 3 different machines now without using diskpart and simply going through custom install and deleting the partitions.

What's to gain with the clean?

I think the results are the same, but this is a simple way to begin the clean install with a "clean" disk.

    From https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766465(v=ws.10).aspx:
"Removes any and all partition or volume formatting from the disk with focus. On master boot record (MBR) disks, only the MBR partitioning information and hidden sector information are overwritten. On GUID partition table (GPT) disks, the GPT partitioning information, including the Protective MBR, is overwritten; there is no hidden sector information".

I don't understand why News kept updating while Weather stopped though. Surely they would require the same permissions?

Does anyone know what the System and Compressed Memory process is and why it is using about 25 to 27% CPU when one of my machines is idle? As soon as I touch the mouse it drops off so it is obviously meant to be a background process.

@Krusty13 It's Superfectch. It can be disabled if you want, by disabling the Superfetch service.

Well, so far it is only using high CPU while the machine is idle but since I don't know if that is beneficial or not I don't know whether it should be disabled or not. I've got an SSD and 8GB RAM if that helps.

If it wasn't for the fact I have the Windows CPU / RAM Gadget installed I wouldn't know it was running I guess, but once I noticed the CPU sitting up and over 25% I opened Task Manager and left the machine idle to find the culprit.

So, what exactly is it doing for over an hour, even after a Restart?
