N8, it appears to be a FIXED vs REMOVABLE issue not a USB vs non-USB issue. I built a simple 1-image (Partition Wizard) YUMI build for both a FIXED and REMOVABLE UFD. Macrium Reflect failed to even offer to image the REMOVABLE build but imaged and restored the FIXED build just fine. I used a Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 64gB drive for the test. I picked one up on eBay a while back primarily because it was a very fast USB3 drive, not because it mounted as a FIXED drive... I found that out while testing for speed (about 180mB/s on my USB hardware). I don't know how to definitely find out if a given spec for a UFD mounts as a FIXED or REMOVABLE... I'm sure there are others out there that are configured as FIXED.
That is interesting. I just never assumed there was a difference with USB flash drives. That does warrant further testing, but I don't think I'm switching back to Reflect any time soon. I spoke to a Macrium representative and he told me that there are a lot of people that are unhappy about the inability to image usb/non-fixed drives and that they are looking to implement it. That's good to here. But, because this is interesting to me, maybe I'll try and get a fixed drive next time I get paid, just to see what happens and what the differences are. thx froggy.
So, I installed Macrium Free v6, ran a backup without issue. When I went to create the rescue media, there was no option for Linux. I created a PR flash drive ok but looks like I need to create a different one if I install on a machine with a different OS (The one I did is Win 8.1 but I have a Win 7 also) ? Is there a reason they dropped Linux?
WinPE issue first... if you create a Recovery Media (W7, W8 or W10), it should work on most any hardware system built within the last 10-yrs or so. A PE10 build has the most robust driver set of all of them... that is the recommended build. The PE build does not have to match the OS being imaged... it can handle them all, it just needs to run successfully on the hardware in use. I would think a PE10 x86 Recovery Media would be the most useful of all as far as hardware architectures are concerned... but you can create anyone you wish. If the system you're creating the media on is x64, I believe that will be your offered processor architecture when doing Recovery Media creation, so you may have to install it on an x86 machine to get an x86 offering. Linux... has been discussed since the products release in Feb2015. At this point, no movement toward a Linux release. They took a very "unofishul" survey in their Forums and the results showed either no need or no interest from 70+% of their users.
So with Linux, I would create the rescue media and forget about it. Can i do the same with WinPE or is there some maintenance required. Also, when I created the media, there was a yield sign on one of the components - I think it was one of the adapters. From device manager I tried to update the driver but I was on the most current. I tested the USB stick and was able to boot and I was able to see the backup so I am guessing I am ok even with the warning?
You can't forget about the Recovery Media (Linux or WinPE). Sometimes a serious bug is fixed in the app and sometimes the app is changed for the better (speed, timing, etc.). If you want those changes, a rebuild is required. On that YIELD sign... there's usually a msg next to it telling you it's covered in the released driver set already or whatever the issue is. If it works, you're probably fine...

win764bit dell desktop, ff44.0.2, norton ns22.6 i installed mr v6 on 11-2015 on my win7 and 2 winxp. i made my rescue disk for win7 and winxp after each installation. today when i clicked on mr to update i get popup stating i have not made my rescue disk would i like to do this now(win7 machine). i'm not getting this on my xp machines. any ideas. thanks
I have been making some differential images with the v6 free addition. When I attempted to restore from the last differential it did not work. I could see the differntial listed, but when I selected it, and then restore, it asked me to locate the image - so I browsed for it on my external hard drive; after locating it, and selecting it for restore, it said something along the line of "it couldn't find the file". This is the first time I have tried to restore from a differential image. When doing so, do you select the last differential image created, or the "full" image that the subsequent differentials were made from?
Just select the image time point you'd like to restore to, same as for an INCREMENTAL. It sounds like something else is wrong with your setup, especially in the area of the image holding disk which is an external.

For PE rescue media, you don't have to create a new one for each computer. Most likely the one you made on your computer will work fine on any other computers.
Thank You, I can try my Win10 one. I just wondered what it would select in XP. I use rewrite able media anyway, so I just erase them when updating.
I just thought of why I will need to create a new rescue media in my wifes XP system. Hers is RAID and my Win 10 Rescue does not have the RAID drivers. I assume when I create the media on hers it will add the RAID drivers. I am going to install it in a few hours and hope for the best! P.S. I can not wait to build her a new system...
Never used Macrium Reflect Free before, and have very limited experience with imaging in general. I have used Clonezilla for a few years to create occasional images of my pc, but never truly tested it by doing a restore. Never had to. Recently, I built my own new desktop pc (Windows 7 Pro edition) and am interested in trying out Macrium Reflect Free. Question: Can I have the free version installed on multiple computers in my home? I've read briefly on their web site that their license can be applied to only one computer. But I don't know if that restriction applies only to their more robust paid versions, or if it also applies to the Free edition.
I read a review on Macrium Reflect free that states: "After installation you will be presented with a registration pop up box that contains a serial key specific to your machine upon clicking "ok" an internet connection is required to authorize the serial before you can start using the program, also the WinPE recovery disk will not function correctly if the software is not registered..." Now when I installed, I did not register in that I did not enter my personal info. If I do an "about" in the program I see the key that was assigned next to "License #" but naturally "Licensed To" is blank. I am assuming I am registered but just wanted to double check.
