    You can try this add-on

    PrefBar

You can use it as a button or a toolbar

    Yes

Rarely clear my cache here but PrefBar does it well

Also using it as a proxy and user-agent switcher among other things

Since some versions ago, something changed in the URL bar to show some kind of suggestions(though I don't remember what exactly.) I turned that off, but the top site is still different showing "Visit *site name*" without URL details, see screenshot for example:
    urlbar.png
Apart from the fact that I rather see the URL details, the top result goes to the HTTP version instead of HTTPS, and before this new behavior the HTTPS version was always on top.
Does anyone know how to change this behavior?

I have never seen this, and the value for browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete is set to True which is the default. But I am always using the "private browsing" mode (Firefox starts up in private mode), perhaps that could play a role here ?

the first entry is a result of what you have typed, no more no less. but people have pain with that - i wont get it. the second is from suggestion or bookmarks - you have options in settings for that. that has nothing to do with private browsing.

Yes there is, and I have those disabled too, so that's probably it.

Hi Swex, using Private browsing does play a role. I get no suggestions of any kind in the URL bar despite not changing any value for any preference in about:config. All I do is untick suggestions for the Location bar in Firefox Options>Privacy and set Firefox to use custom settings for history (Firefox uses Private browsing). Unticking the suggestions for the location bar and using Private browning gets rid of all suggestions, read what it says about suggestions and remembering history in the picture below.:)

Hey Bo, I hope all is fine and dandy with you ;) Hmmm the settings looks a bit different for me. This is how the "search" tab in my settings panel look, as you can see I only have one check box, but you have two. I miss the check box that is connected to the "...locaton bar results"

"Ge sökförslag" = provide search suggestions. I have this ticked since I want suggestions when I write in the search bar, and as seen in my second screenshot I get suggestions from the search bar, but not from the URL bar, which is how I want it to work.

I am not sure what is right or wrong anymore with Firefox as they change stuff so often in the releases, plus I also have a few about:config tweaks in place that very well can play a role here too. What I mean is that it can be very hard to compare as everyone may have FF set up in some different way, even if the visible settings in the panel may be more or less the same e.g comparing what checkbox that is ticked or not. But I have no idea why I miss one of the checkboxes that you have in your screenshot. Though I have only used Firefox for a year or so, so I am still a noob, but you are a veteran :geek::D

Edit: And here's how the Privacy tab looks and how I have it set up.....

Is easy to reproduce the check box that you are missing. If you create a new Firefox profile and select Never remember history, after you restart the browser, the check box will appear.

Or, like I set things up. I use Custom settings for history and set it up like in the picture below. When I restart the browser, the check box shows up.

Your Privacy tab looks like mine, after restarting Firefox. That is, despite I ticking Clear history when Firefox closes, when Firefox restarts that check box is not ticked.

Brummelchen, when I write something in the Location bar, I get nothing (the way I want it).

But no history is saved during private browsing, and I always use private browsing since Firefox starts up in private browsing mode. So if browsing history is required to get suggestions from the Location bar, then I can understand why I have never seen any suggestions there (despite having the default True value for browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete), because I have never saved any history in Firefox since I started to use Firefox last year. :ouch:

I thought suggestions = suggestions, but I guess not then :D

I see. Wonder why the tick does stick after the restart and why your "clear history when firefox closes" checkbox isn't greyed out like mine is.

If you change your accept 3'rd party cookie setting to "Never" and "keep until: Firefox closes" instead of "they expire", does the history checkbox below get greyed out then ?

Other than that our Privacy tab looks the same.

The tick doesn't stick after I restart the browser. And the checkbox is greyed out after restarting Firefox, like yours. The picture I posted earlier shows how I setup History before I restart the browser. After restarting the browser, my History settings look like in the picture below. Like yours, I think.

You might notice, my cookies get set to keep cookies until I close Firefox. The point I wanted to make is that we don't need to change any preference in about:config to keep Firefox from asking questions or making suggestions when we write something in the Location bar. I don't get any and all I change to get it that way I do it via Firefox Options.
