have any of you Norton users ever run into audio stuttering/skipping related to DPC latency spikes due to Norton?

I can reproduce it on a friend's machine just by loading a webpage in any browser while playing music in Spotify or foobar2000. They're running the latest version of Norton Security on Windows 10. It doesn't happen with Norton removed. Issue also happens regardless of output device. I initially thought it was the onboard audio flaking out, but I also tried it with a pci-e soundcard installed, and that stuttered as well.

I found some posts on the official Norton forums from back in 2011-2012, but nothing recent. PC is beyond capable, Intel i7 4770k, 32GB RAM, nv gtx980 gpu, OS and apps on an SSD, etc.

I have seen more recent posts but I don't have time to look them up. It is definitely a problem. The only way to currently resolve it that I am aware of is to use another product and hope they fix it at some point.

ah, okay. it must just be a matter of keywords i didn't use to search for it, because i didn't really find much in the last year that actually had any discussion. i suggested Norton to my friend because it's a value-add w/comcast, but the audio stuttering stuff is pretty awful so I guess I'll suggest something else since it seems this probably won't ever get fixed (seeing how I found threads dating back 3-4 yrs ago w/the same complaint)

I have not had any issues with it on that front, This is on 3 Alienware laptops and one Alienware desktop tho. So its not like the PC's are starved for power

While I am not currently using NS, due to the current FF Toolbar issues, among other things, I have followed the NS Forums daily and do not recall any recent posts respecting this DPC latency issue.

If my memory serves me correctly, at least in the in the hey days of XP and Vista there were several programs available to assist in diagnosing DPC Latency Issues. There are likely more recent tools. You might want to do a general internet search, rather than a NS Forum Search.

Evidently, xxJackxx's memory is better than mine: Here's a 2012 NIS thread that might be helpful. How much RAM you got in there xxJackxx?? :)

Evidently it can occasionally be an issue caused by Norton/Symantec Endpoint Products also:

I was going to search but their site says search is temporarily unavailable. I'll look again when I have time, but I'm sure there were posts about the current build. I don't think it was its own thread, maybe part of another. I have recently switched back to Android phone, so I now run my Norton subscriptions on the phones, and run something else on the PCs. I am really liking their phone apps.

I was able to reproduce the issue on my own PC and my notebook, both of which have different PC configs than my friend, using the current build of Norton security available via liveupdate. I downloaded the trial just to verify it wasn't hardware related. Only similarities between my config and theirs were that we both have 32GB of RAM, we both had Norton installed and we both run Windows 10.

    My steps to reproduce:
load an audio file in foobar2000.
    play it.
    open chrome or firefox.
load a page with a lot of content. news sites work great because of all the flash video and image content rendered on the page.

that's how I diagnosed what specific application was causing elevated DPC latency - the old dpclat tool doesn't work well on win8 or win10 due to kernel changes. it can falsely report elevated or normal dpc latency when the opposite is true. Latencymon by Resplendence software works better and is actively developed.

I have not used Norton in some years, but I have a 2011 license, and might consider it if it is still valid.

Has anyone used Norton lately, and if so what is your assessment? Since Norton is not participating in the AVC tests I have no idea as to its effectiveness.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

Jerry, I am using it and love it. It cant be compared to Norton of old and it is as light as anything else I have used. Its protection level it at or very near the top in everything I have seen. And I know you and banking online and yes it will provide outstanding protection for that purpose.

Thanks, for the information. Haven't heard from you lately. I thought you would stick with Avira?:)

Thanks All for the help.I suspect my license is no good, and I have an unused KISS that I will use next.

    @trjam ,

    Hi,

Just an FYI, I asked if I could use the Norton logo as an avatar here and was told I do not have permission, so perhaps you might consider something different too.

    Cheers,
    Dave
If it hasn't ever been activated it should still be valid. You could contact their Customer Support and double check if you wanted.

I contacted Norton Chat, and learned that my license is still good for 3 PC and 1 year. That is good news. I think I will try Norton again.

I haven't touched Norton myself in years as it was like a dead weight on systems back then.
But, I have had to repair some computers with Norton on it, and have had difficulty removing it and have had to resort to using Revo to remove it.
Also, over the years, Norton Internet Security has been responsible for connectivity issues, but those issues may be behind them now.

    By the way...
The best Norton/Symantec product I ever used was Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. It was very light and unobtrusive. :thumb:

The only bad about Norton AntiVirus is the bad reputation, from back in 2009.

That has been repeated over and over again...

In 2010 Norton AV has been rewritten, and is now one of the lightweighted and best AVs.

    Lightweight? Yes. Best? Umm.....

I have repeatedly covered the details of their "turnaround" in various posts over the years. Let's just say Symantec took the cheapest and easiest possible approach.

Could you elaborate more? Any old thread about this?
