I want to ask which is the right way to create a image of the system volume. I have Windows 7 installed on C drive and also Acronis True Image is installed on C drive. Which is the right way to create system image - with the Acronis True Image installed on the C drive or from live usb OS that contain Acronis True Image?

Yes, but is it not better to create the system image backup from live usb because then the operating system is not running?

No. That's 20th Century thinking. Just wrong.

Peter, as Brian has said, that's very old thinking.

Today's imagers use a facility in the OS called VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service). This feature allows Windows to LOCK (or FREEZE) a copy of the current FileSystem for the imager to use. All continued Windows activity occurs outside of that copy, and as a result provides the imager with a stable, non-changing FileSystem to image.

Of course "external" imaging works as well... but it takes the running system away from the user for quite some time.

Indeed. We can discard all 20th century thinking. And all the thinking of previous centuries also. Just wrong.
