Looks like Google will be merging their ChromeOS with Android. They'll take the best security practices from ChromeOS and merge them with Android. As early as next year. http://www.theverge.com/2015/10/29/9639950/google-combining-android-chromeos-report http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015...-os-into-android-unveil-unified-os-next-year/ http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/29/android-chrome-os-merger-coming-next-year/
There were many rumors years ago regarding the potential merger. This is a logical step IMO. The combination of native apps and web apps serve the future well for now, till we see more of a transition to the cloud and especially when android apps are already ported to chrome. Looking forward to see it unfold.
Well, I'm split about this. On 1 hand, it makes sense to merge them. There are a few Android apps I would like to use on Chromebook. On the other hand though, I like Chrome's simplicity as a web-focused OS, with it's security design & fast updates unlike the mess that Android faces currently.
They are not merging into an unified OS: http://chrome.blogspot.com/2015/11/chrome-os-is-here-to-stay.html
This would definitely be a big hurdle for them to overcome. As you said chrome is well focused 6 week updates with android being far too fragmented. They need to resolve those issues first before they can successfully merge. You are correct google has blatantly said ChromeOS is here to stay and that it wont be phased out, but admitted there will be a much tighter integration between the two. This is what i believe will happen; ChromeOS and Android are here to stay but as admitted by google a much tighter integration will follow. ChromeOS and material design will make chromeOS look like android without being it. ChromeOS will stay but as a result of the evolution will effectively pick up the best of android OS this will expand the OS's capabilities. as result; Chome for windows desktop will be much more capable, having the abiltiy to communicate with android in a much deeper sense ChromeOS will support android notifications, have easy unlock by bluetooth, or some proximity sensor. ChomeOS will support SMS ChromeOS will support android games and pick up where you left off in android Chrome tabs shared in chrome os and android Chrome OS will be business end of android. Work, education, writing, research, productivity etc while tying into the benefits of android. While android will be as always be focused on mobile, games and social etc. In this sense, business will be focused on desktops and laptops while android will always be mobile first. This is the same concept that MS should have had, instead of bringing together business and mobile. They should have focused on Native desktop and have mobile, tablets as an extension. Not as a complete one solution. ChromeOS ill be essentially the reponsible mature older brother of android that can be social but rather concentrates on productivity, while android being slightly immature, playful while being able to defend itself.
Yep, I fully agree. I think the same way as you basically Chrome OS will acquire the things Android has (apps, material design, etc.) and Android will acquire what Chrome OS has (security, fast and automatic updates on a set schedule, etc.)
Awesome news, it would be nice if the Tablet version of Android would support a Chrome OS mode when you dock it to a monitor/TV and if Chrome OS had compatibility with Debian apps.
The security holes in Android are beyond belief. Imo this is more about securing Android than anything else. How successful has ChromeOS been $$wise?
It sems that this "security holes" dont“have any important effects in the vast number of Android users.
