You used to be able to uninstall the Avira launcher in the free version but I reinstalled Avira free and it says the launcher can't be uninstalled since it's part of the Antivirus; is this a new "feature" It's just bloatware that is not needed when all I have is the Antivirus and that's all I intend to use!
its been that way in the beta for a bit now. the launcher could not be uninstalled. have you tried downloading the normal .exe? http://personal.avira-update.com/package/wks_avira13/win32/en/pecl/avira_free_antivirus_en.exe

Alpha Soft taps Avira’s anti-malware engine for customized security product Tettnang, Germany --- October 7, 2015 http://www.avira.com/en/press-detai...ti-malware-engine-customized-security-product https://www.alpkey.com/
Here is a link to a fascinating post on the Avira Blog. It summarizes a presentation that some Avira employees gave at the recent VB2015 meeting. The post describes Avira's automated botnet tracking system and has a fair amount of detail. I was a bit surprised by that since it seems like security companies usually don't go into any details about how their systems actually work. I do remember seeing Kaspersky, Norton, and ESET publish details about identification and take down operations they conducted but this post seems different than that. Anyway, this is a cool post from Avira. http://blog.avira.com/botnet-milking/
Hello people, Am i right in thinking that with free Avira AV, if you dont install the Ask toolbar then all you effectively have is an AV scanner with no proactive protection? Hope i'm wrong.
1)The reactive & proactive detection is the same for both Avira free & paid. 2) Ask toolbar removed from Avira products since long time ago. http://www.ghacks.net/2013/09/20/good-news-avira-remove-searchfree-toolbar-products/ 3) With Avira Free you can't use the Web Protection. You can use the Avira Browser Safety instead. 4) Difference between Avira Free and Paid= * =
Interesting choice of oxymoronic terminology "pure and fresh malware", we don't want anything contaminated with benign code! On a serious note, Avira hasn't detected anything in the last 2 years, even third party flash drives, always notoriously infected with all sorts of malware are reasonably clean as of lately. Where is the malware? Perhaps Windows Defender is doing a good job after all.

Interesting, I tried to get this update through the updated but it failed. I then noticed that it hadn't done a successful update in two days - without alerting me to this issue. The only way I can get it to update is by turning off "Advanced Process Detection" and "Protect processes from unwanted termination". It then downloaded 15.00.13.210 and applied it. I restarted the laptop anyway and turned these settings back on, did another restart but it again fails to update with the same error - "Internet connection failed". I sent a message to Avira support first thing this morning but have yet to get a response. Is anyone else seeing this?

Thanks Anon, bit of a shame to see it's not yet fixed. I've left these options unticked - not ideal but at least I can continue updating for now. Thanks again!
1) Can you post the last part from the failed update log? What error number you get in update log? 2) What about KB1765? Set in Avira configuration the "No proxy" option if you do not use an proxy and try once again. 3) Try with "Advanced Process Detection" unticked only.
15:38:02 [UPD] [ERROR] Connection to Avira update bridge failed: -2146893051. Check your Internet connection or proxy settings. 15:38:02 [UPD] [ERROR] Missing settings from updater bridge: server '' file '' I am not using a proxy server but have tried both the other option in that dialog screen, neither fixes the issue. That doesn't work either, both options have to be unticked in order for me to update.
@ LemonJelly, I see..... I'm doubt if you will have any result, but you can try a clean install http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/1497 http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/902 After install, set in Avira configuration the "No proxy" option.
Hi anon, this has fixed the issue! Thanks very much (I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't come back!).
Thanks for the feedback. As I think that it will come back, in order to get an early warning set the alert i.e.: 2 days
Hi anon, you were dead right! I didn't use my laptop for the rest of yesterday, I have booted up this morning and the first attempt at an automatic update failed, I tried to start an update manually and this also failed. I've had no response from Avira either. Any further ideas or should I request a refund? Thanks.
Give them some time. You can also post your ticket (only the reference number) here so if someone from Avira comes, he can have a look. --- No, that's the only workaround for the moment: Uncheck the "Protect processes from unwanted termination" option Please also note: --- It's up to you.
