@imdb I've experienced slowdowns on multiple computers. The one laptop without issues was the exception.
I've managed to exclude the folder where I keep all of my installers from being scanned by MSE when I open it. I'm not really noticing any performance degradation, but there never was much.
The only logical explanation I can think of is that you're a software junkie with LOTS of relatively unknown programs. Either that or a bad case of the software bugs...
Microsoft admits Security Essentials will “always be on the bottom” http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/1...rity-essentials-will-always-be-on-the-bottom/
In some cases that may be true. However it was causing issues on a i5 Windows 10 laptop with very little software installed.
roger_m, if this was the case while you were running MSE/WD, I can understand why it felt heavy in usage.
roger_m, I see the opposite in my Win7 64-bit Task Manager: (Process | CPU | Working Set (Memory) | Peak Working Set (Memory) | I/O Reads | I/O Writes | Description) The high peak working set is due to a daily PC scan earlier today.
@JRViejo When I say heavy, I'm talking about high CPU use slowing down my computer, not RAM use. RAM usage is something I only take note of if a computer has less than 3GB of RAM, becuase if you've got enough RAM, the memory use by an antivirus shouldn't affect performance.
roger_m, I agree with your RAM statement, however, did you know that you can limit the CPU usage during a scan via Settings? At least on my MSE I can; don't know about WD.
@JRViejo Yes, I know that. Maybe that could help. I can't test it right now as I have uninstalled WD from this laptop. However, this may work better.
roger_m, I did Mention that to you, and I have enabled that tweak since discovering the article awhile ago. BTW, I have limited MSE's CPU scan usage to 50%.
@JRViejo I had forgotten that it was you that suggested it to me. I will give it a try when I get a chance.
Roger_M : The reason why I suggested that your experience of slowdowns probably relates to some other system setting you do as part of your setup routine, are that I see very different types of hardware on a daily basis. Some very strong and others weaker then weak - yet none of the systems have slowdowns with MSE/Defender. At home I have several laptops equipped with i7's and a Surface Pro 3 i5 - of course, none of these can be slowed down. BUT - I also have an old mini-ITX equipped with an Atom N330 paired with an NVIDIA ION GPU that I have built into one of our kitchen cupboards. That tiny machine are also running Windows 10 Pro and naturally Windows Defender, and we use it for all kind of stuff since it's always on anyway - and there are no slowdowns. The weakest machine I can think of are probably the laptop that one of my friends 11 year old daughter has. It's equipped with an AMD E450 APU. She is running Windows 10 Home with Windows Defender. The last time I was over there, she was doing schoolwork. Being 11, schoolwork means - she was writing in Word, but also had Spotify running, Facebook open in the browser and SIMS running in the background ??!! I was rather puzzled how she could concentrate on all that. But I didn't see any slowdowns. This leads me to thinking that you may alter some settings elsewhere in system or maybe even have some other program running that is conflicting (shooting in the dark here, since I have no knowledge of your installed programs) Otherwise, I hope JRViejo's two advices could help you to see lower CPU utilization, because slowdowns surely are frustrating.
On my Vista machine (Dell Latitude x86 SP2) I'm using Panda Free AV (v15.1.0) and it seems to be more memory friendly than MSE, which I used before. Now with the new version out of Panda (v16.0.1), it's definitely slower and has been giving me all sorts problems, mainly crashes and false positives. So downgraded. Hey, is the the 2016 version supposed to ready for daily use, or it in beta?
Sorry about that, I've reading a lot of threads I must of posted here by accident. But I could've swear Panda was mention in comparative of MSE. Hmmmm........?
You asked a question about Panda in this MSE thread.... and I am strongly advising you to post that question in the Panda thread instead. Let's get back to MSE now.
Thanks Martin. Yep, I'm quite happy with this setup on my Win10 machine and will probably keep things as they are, at least for the foreseeable future. Exactly! Ah. Good to know. I wonder if there is a real need to update too often now knowing that MSE / WD are utilising cloud lookups more than previously? I can definitely understand wanting the latest signatures installed locally if you are working offline, but that may not be quite so important if your machine is 'net connected.
That's a good tweak. I sometimes notice weird CPU spikes after manually updating MSE and after applying that tweak the spikes seem to have ceased.
Does MSE/Windows Defender still take a LONG time to quarantine/delete infected files? I find that odd when other programs delete or quarantine in seconds.
