I noticed this was on in my Win 10. I have an SSD and a 3TB HDD and save Macrium Free V6 and True Image 2016 to it. I ONLY do full images but wonder if this will hurt the image in any way. I would not think so but have not seen this discussed.
Defragmentation does not hurt the images. If you defragment the partition or the HDD where the images are stored they will be fine. If you defragment the partition that you are imaging, and you do an incremental or differential of a full image, then the resultant image size will be huge. But since you mention that you only do full images so you have nothing to worry about. If you have a SSD, disable the Windows 10 auto optimize defragmentation on the SSD. There is no performance benefit in defragmenting large image files. Even if the 1+ GB image file is fragmented into 3 fragments, there will be no performance degradation in reading that file.
W10 only "optimizes" SSDs (TRIM, NO DEFRAG) and only defrags HDDs. Optimization of SSDs should be left on.
According to Scott Hanselman, Windows will do a little extra beyond TRIM for an SSD as needed, on a default monthly basis: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheRealAndCompleteStoryDoesWindowsDefragmentYourSSD.aspx but no "defrag", i.e., full file defragmentation, in the classical sense.
Correct. The "minor" defrag only affect some Windows FileSystem files occasionally and is required to maintain best access to all files... no pain for the SSD, the WRITEs are very minimal.
