I'm testing Heimdal Pro and until now i'm liking.

    Very light and stable.

Works together with Emsisoft Internet Security.

I have AdGuard, WinPatrol and AppGuard in realtime.

Probably i will buy some licences for my PCs.

Wow, thanks for sharing this. :thumb:

Edit: Activated and working fine. However, how does "Secure DNS" works with DNSCrypt? I checked GRC and leaktest and it still shows the cloudns server I use in DNSCrypt.

Sorry for the late answer, Jeam!

I was out and about on a short holiday.

Bob is right (thank you for your contribution, Bob!): Heimdal's blacklist supplements any list that an antivirus product might have. Even if a website is blocked in both Heimdal and your antivirus of choice, Heimdal will catch it first, because it works at a DNS level. The feature in the AV will not be replaced, so they will work in parallel.

I really appreciate your interest in the product and I'm sure that these questions will come in handy for others as well!

    Have a great week, everyone!

    Hey there!

Here's a quick answer to your question: Heimdal PRO will overwrite the DNS service you're using (in this case, DNSCrypt). So if you're using DNSCrypt, the data will also flow through Heimdal's Secure DNS, and will then return to your DNS solution, which is why you're getting the current results. We're just adding a security layer and working constantly on making Heimdal compatible with other security software you may be using.

    I hope this helps!

    @Andra Zaharia

What happens if one is using a so called smart DNS service in order to circumvent regional restrictions of streaming services. Would Heimdal undo this?

Good news: Heimdal won't undo your DNS configuration. As long as there's an already configured DNS, Heimdal PRO will use that one once it determines that the request made by your PC is legitimate. After that, Heimdal will process all the requests and use the DNS configuration you've established. I hope that answers your question.

Ah, so Heimdal is just relaying the DNS queries back to DNSCrypt. Good job. :thumb:

Thanks for the 1 year free offer. This all sounds great but I only have one question for those who have been using Heimdal: Has it caught anything that your existing AV/Security Suite wouldn't have (or has missed).

It did caught a suspicious download that came from a website apparently known for distributing malware, the download turned out to be OK but at least I was warned.

Yes, on a couple of occasions it flagged up a suspicious download site well before EIS picked up one of them. Quite impressive (on a very small sample!).

    Hi Andra,

Thanks very much for the information above regarding possible duplication with AV software of the protection against malicious websites. This is good to know.

Just one question left (for now!), this time about the automatic updating of Adobe Flash, Java, and so forth. As we all know, when we update Flash and Java, we are given the chance to also install unwanted stuff like the Ask toolbar, McAfee something-or-other, and Google Chrome. They are selected by default. So when Heimdal Pro updates Flash and Java, does it also install these additional things, or does it bypass them so that you ONLY get the newest version of Flash and Java?

Speaking from my experience in the last 6 weeks.
    Sun Jre (32 & 64bit) updated 3 times.
    Adobe Flash Player updated twice.
Adobe Flash Plugin updated 3 times.
    Have seen no unwanted trash.

It did warn me once re 'bad' website but I didn't research it further ... it does seem light, and I like the idea of the secure DNS, not sure what additional malware detection is happening. Also software patching in my case is a bit slim (in my case). I like it, but at the price, I am not sure I would pay the full normal subscription for it.

-i did see a testing report a few years ago. it was some european one evaluating banking security software (can't remember them all, but also included webroot, trusteer, heimdal, zemema, and some others i can't recall). so it is tested. i can't recall results though, but no one aced it.

-i'm trying heimdal pro right now (just snagged a free pro on a giveaway). it seems very light (i dumped trusteer years ago because of the drag).

-their dns seems to be focused on banking/zeus sites. they likely do this better than others, given their focus on it. though that is conjecture on my part. if they do detect a connection to a banking malware site, they kill your internet. they also claim to protect your personal data, though, i am not sure if this is only via the means i just mentioned, or other means (such as their behavioral protection).

-they also have a behavioral guard. this is what interested me the most. any light addition, behavioral guard or hips, is welcome as a supplement for my security. but i have only been trying it now for a few days, sooooooo, we will seeee.

Nice to find direct support from the developer on this thread. I got the freebee because of the emphasis on financial security. In my compartimentalized approach to security, I have one computer specifically dedicated to financial transactions and its security is done a little differently than on my other computers. This might be a good addition. Getting a little information on what it does and how it works and that there is a company behind it that looks real and trustworthy makes me more inclined to try it.

Has anyone had any problems with Heimdal Pro and Win 10?

After running HP for a day or so, my internet connection suddenly cut out, and I was not able to solve the problem, despite trying a number of common fixes when I Googled the problem.

The error window stated that the DNS server isn't responding.

System restore/uninstalling HP also had no effect. I had to go back to a previous image.
