Re: WFN - I tested the alpha when Windows 10 was released. I guess I'll wait until things are a bit more stable before I test WFN 2.0 again. I might try WFN 1.9 soon and report my findings.
Anyone knows what to allow outbound for manual "Check for updates"? I allowed update service and BITS, but manual update still fails? Out of habit, I set windows firewall default blocking out, but explorer requiring outbound for smartscreen sort of defeats the purpose for blocking outbound. I think I will put on wife's laptop Glasswire when it upgrades from Win7 Ult to Win10 Pro.
@Rolo42 Yes but I was asking about manual update (what to allow when blocking by default outbound connections).
Thanks for mentioning 1.9.2.9. I went ahead and installed that version. When running it for the first time I saw the little "fly out" by the taskbar. I'm not seeing an autorun entry or new scheduled task for it though. Does it autostart?
It runs automatically. The documentation seems to be fairly sparse, but this may help: https://wfn.codeplex.com/documentation. Also I found some more information on how it works here: http://www.ghacks.net/2011/07/28/windows-firewall-notifier/ A small part of the last article says: So as I understand it it doesn't really run as a separate program. Therefore it shouldn't take a whole lot of resources. I have a shortcut to the "WFN Console" on my desktop so that I can see or delete rules that I have added, though I seldom mess with it. I think I had to create the shortcut manually from the .exe in the program files. Once it gets used to what you allow or block it should settle down. But it sounds like it's working properly for you so far.
The port should already be opened with a predefined rule (uneditable); I don't know which (try the Windows Peer to Peer ones, since 10 uses P2P for updates) Avira free (I just switched) only uses Windows Firewall.
I may be misunderstanding, and I've never used Avira. However Windows Firewall Notifier is only a controller for the Windows Firewall, so I think if Avira works with the Windows Firewall it should work with WFN. In any case, I don't believe it would hurt to try it.
The only firewall since Vista is Windows firewall. No stand alone firewalls exist now for Windows, there are only guis ( Comodo, Outpost… ) for the Windows filtering platform. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366510(v=vs.85).aspx On Linux there is the firewall Netfilter, guis are Gufw, Ufw, Firewalld, etc … Ok men ? Vive la France !
I'm confused also. Does Avira free come with a its own firewall, or a GUI or controller, for the Windows firewall that would interfere with the use of Windows Firewall Notifier?
I don't see it interfering with WFN, et. al. It only provides: Links to Windows Firewall rules and andvanced configuration A toggle for Windows Firewall A toggle to block all incoming connections, regardless of allow rules A toggle for the "when an app is blocked" notification
There has been much talk about the strength and ability of the Windows Firewall with advance configuration.. Does anybody know how to limit the scope to domain/hostnames? This is useful for dynamic IP addresses assigned by internet providers. If Windows Firewall cannot achieve this, what are our Windows 10 compatible options?
I've deleted all comodo files and recordedd items with revo uninstaller pro trial to reinstall the last updated versione of COMODO firewall (for win10) but is freezes my OS. Now i use sphinx gui and i'm looking for HIPS
Thank you. See here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thre...ecurity-disable-windows-10-activation.378816/
" So' i've discovered Bitdefender av has some HIPS and Chrome is sandboxed yet.. " No Hips in Bitdefender, dynamic heuristique yes, no " HIPS " in 64 bits with patchguard, ok ?
