I saw the yellow exclamation point next to shut down in the start menu, but when I shut down that is all it does, no installing of updates just a regular shutdown like nothing else is happening, why was it doing this? How come there is an exclamation point when it isn't installing any updates? I went to start- control panel- system and security - view installed updates for windows updates and then this is the list that showed me. I DO NOT see any new updates for Aug. and I just started my computer just now but now, I DO NOT see the yellow exclamation point icon by the shut down button..it's gone!! It is very strange because during the shut down process, it did not say anything was downloading. All it said was "shutting down" and that is all. Someone please help me. What should I do?
A better place would be to check the update history Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > View Update History It might be that an update was downloaded but was not installed because your system did not need that particular update.
where do I exactly go in order to check if I'm using Windows 7? Also Was there any recommended windows updates this month for Windows 7 or not yet?
To check which version of Windows you are running go to Control Panel > System and Security > System I am not sure if any update has been released this month for Windows 7. Usually major updates are released on the second Tuesday of the month, unless they have changed this, but like I said before, if any update was applied it should be in your update history, otherwise no updates were applied to your system.
What about the yellow exclamation point logo that went away? How come it was there if there was no updates to download/install?
As I mentioned before, sometimes the updates are downloaded and are ready to be installed, this is why you see the yellow exclamation mark on shut down or reboot, but for one reason or the other the updates were not applied to your system. I would not be too much concerned about this because if there was an update Windows will automatically download and install it. Did you ever look at your update history? Because if an update was applied or if an update failed to install, it will show up there. It is always a good idea to periodically check your update history because sometimes an error occurs and Windows cannot apply any updates. A friend of mine recently complained that his computer keeps on showing the yellow exclamation mark every time he shut downs or reboots his computer. When I checked his update history, all the updates since May 2015 had failed to install and his Windows was downloading the same updates and trying to install them over and over again.

I didn't or more precisely, I couldn't. I followed the Windows update troubleshooting tutorials, even downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool, but to no avail. The only solution was to either reinstall Windows or do a fresh clean install. But since my friend wants to upgrade to Windows 10, and Windows 10 was about to be released in a week's time, so I told him to wait for about month and then update to Windows 10; he did not need to worry about resolving this Windows update issue.
The second screenshot is the windows update history page, also today I turned on my laptop and I see the yellow exclamation point is back again on the shut down button. It looks like its still not downloading/installing on shut down. What should I do?
The second screenshot is from Control Panel > Programs > View Installed Updates I was asking for the Windows update History which can be found at Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > View Update History Let me know what it says there. It will show if some of your updates are failing to install.
