Thanks for the insightful post! :thumb: Currently using a Dell desktop that dates back five to seven or so years and the more I harp about it I'll probably end up buying a new (Dell) gig altogether. I'll wait and see how much computer for around a grand ($) will swing within the next year... give or take.

I was using tencent pc manager and it flagged the store app as trojan and quarantined it . But it can't restore it back because the windowsapps folder in program files is read only . Any way to get store app back ?

Indeed, it does not work on mine RTM, but people claim, it works on 10240, so who knows. :doubt:

Well at least device drivers can be disabled. Do not worry, 1-2 catastrophic updates and MS will re-evaluate its policy.

Still getting consistent Explorer crashes here from KB3074681. Go to Control Panel - Network - Change adapter settings - Click on Properties for any network device - bang goes Explorer. Go to Control Panel - Programs and Features - View Installed updates - Right click on any update installed - bang goes Explorer. I suppose there are many more reproducible areas from this in which Explorer crashes but those have been heavily reported so far.

Microsoft has pushed out an update on Saturday and another one or two updates today, Sunday, as well. It's been one patch per day for the past week which has been rather interesting. So many reboots. But hey, we shall see what comes of this.

I haven't noticed any problems here with that update yet, but then again, I'm not using Explorer all that much either.

Still waiting for the pre- load files that is supposed to be sent out before July 29.. I must be at the bottom of the list as I have not received anything yet.

If you choose to reserve your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC to get the free upgrade to Windows 10 before its launch date on July 29, Microsoft will pre-load files for the new OS on your machine ahead of the release.

In a Windows 10 FAQ page, Microsoft states:

When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly.

Is it possible to create firewall rules to stop windows from updating?

I would like to know that to, to go a step further I would know if you could disable the Microsoft network protocols or at least the protocol that controls the security updates which are the ones that usually Bork things up. I know that is possible in Windows 8.1 64 bit but I don't know if it is possible in Windows 10 64 bit.

WinPrivacy allows you to block certain programs from accessing the internet. There are several blocking options to choose from. I think it would be easier to determine what to block than a firewall process . The Plus feature gives a lot more details. Maybe it will be useful in blocking the silent background installs that MS is sending out for W10 . I included a screen shot of one exe so you can see what it displays and the options available for blocking. As far as WSUS goes - it is no doubt hidden but someone here may know how to ferret it out.

Make a new image full backup often if you upgrade to Windows 10. I had to do a restore of Windows 7 twice due to Windows updates failing after rebooting. Failed to install Windows updates after rebooting. The computer just reboots and fails trying to finish installing Windows updates. Windows would turn on Windows updares or start installing on shut down. I would select download and let me deide what to install. Windows would reset Windows updates to the default settings. On shutdown it would start installing on shutdown or rebooting. Microsoft should have have Windows ask if you want to install now.You cannot use your computer on a work day at your job. Cannot use your computer at home when Windows decides to intall updates on it without asking.

Many times it maybe 100 or more updates. It will take hours to finish updating. The updates may fail to install most of the updates.
If you are just shutting down to reset the computers memnory usage. You would have to wait for Windows to install updates. You will be stuck on installing updates on reboot. This will continue until you press the power button. The only option after would be to restore using a current image backup.
