I have a question about upgrading. If I upgrade to 10 from Win 7, what happens to all my apps? For example, if I'm using Panda Cloud Free in 7, will that be my AV in 10 also? I'd rather have a clean install of 10, and I've never upgraded any OS before. Anyone know what happens to the apps after an upgrade?

I you upgrade "in place" from Windows Update, your apps should be conserved. If you do a clean install, they will be lost. No problem with Panda Free in any case, if it is necessary you can reinstall it. If you do a clean install and you don´t reinstall it, Windows Defender will be enabled by default.

Ok, thanks. Just curious. I have Office 2007 also, which is quite old by now, so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. If I'm not satisfied, I can then do a clean install, and install whatever apps I want or need.

It seams that Settings and good old Control Panel will coexist.

Yes...it's quite disjointed. It feels as if I'm running Win7 in a seamless virtual mode. :thumbd:

It's been stated that over time the control panel will be replaced by settings over time.

Our reservation for W10 on our desktop (W7/64) has been revoked. When first reserved we got a warning that the GPU drivers MIGHT not work, but the reservation was accepted. It even showed as confirmed on the WU screen. After installing the last round of windows updates today, we noticed that the W10 reservation was no longer there, so we ran the 'GW10 check your PC' and this time the message stated: This system does not meet W10 requirements, it does not qualify for W10 (the GPU was not specifically sited as the issue). So it was updated by one of those KB nags - I was going to hide the ones that kept reappearing over and over again, but decided to just install the blighters.

My guess is that the OEM told MS they are not going to update the AMD chipset for this device - an example of the 10 yr lifecycle statement for W10 devices - OEM support for a specific device...

"A device may not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside of the Original Equipment Manufacturer's ('OEM') support period."

That is why I checked the drivers before I reserved a copy of Windows 10, just doing all window up dates are not enough the computer must be as ready as possible for Windows 10.

There's ten days for it to get sorted so I wouldn't give up on it yet. You could also check the OEM website for an updated AMD chipset driver.

First, the Win10 10-year 'pledge' or whatever doesn't apply to your pre-Win10 machine.
Next, M$ may require OEMs to support their product for 10 years per the OEM agreement or to be "Certified for..." or, as you pointed out, OEM support may be shorter, which is a good point and goes to the reputation of the OEM rather than M$ since M$ has never, ever supported OEM versions of Windows.
Finally, because it isn't officially supported doesn't mean it won't work.

    ATM chipset?

@Rolo42 ... You caught a typo, what was I thinking? The AMD chipset. is what I meant. I 've since edited the post - tnx.

The OEM has not released their list of supported devices for W10, as yet. No driver list either . I fully expect this desktop to be condemned to unsupported under W10, as AMD has not released any new drivers for this GPU close on 2 years.

Yep. With home, they just happen, with pro you can defer the reboot. But you have no choice in what updates you get. For me it's a non starter, it updates drivers and breaks my system.

The way I see it, as it stands right now with 10, there are 2 main things they need to do to make 10 a winner.

    1) Allow the 10 Home user to have control over updates. Without this, IMO, it spells disaster. This will be a real problem for the user, and MS.
    2) Clean up all the bugs that I and others are still encountering.

I think if they did just those 2 things, they'd have a winner. I believe the basic design of 10 is acceptable now.
