The new build appears to work fine. I can confirm that Hyper Scan no longer scans for rootkits; Threat Scan must be used.
Regarding removal of the option to scan for rootkits during Hyper Scan we have this explanation from the MBAM production team: "Unfortunately that setting was never properly removed or disabled in Hyper Scans so it was possible to incorrectly configure Hyper Scans to include a rootkit scan up until 2.1.7. We corrected it because technically, if a rootkit was ever discovered then a full file system scan would also be necessary to ensure we can detect and clean the rootkit properly. This file system scan is NOT a default part of Hyper Scan. And while we could add an option for a full file system scan to Hyper Scan, that would add even more time to the total scan time, thus further defeating the entire purpose of Hyper. But it absolutely should NOT have been. Honestly, users could have found themselves in a bad situation because there are some cases where if we detected a rootkit during a Hyper scan and it was NOT followed up appropriately with a full file system scan, then that could have had caused severe problems on the system. so while it may have seemed like the rootkit scan was running just fine, and in the majority of cases it was, this has the potential for undesirable results. So really, should never been allowed from the beginning." http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/240099-latest-version-malwarebytes-98.html
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Update to 2.1.8 https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/169387-malwarebytes-anti-malware-update-to-218/
The .7 & .8 passed the beta test? "only a small number of users will receive it today"......"limited users"....... "no download link"....... "potential crash when scanning"..... "The throttled upgrades have been reset....... As far as I can see, the customers become beta testers.......
I work with removing malware daily, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has become almost useless. I can't believe how far it has fallen. It used to be a great tool. It finds mostly harmless PUPs now. No wonder they're purchasing something more useful.
Here is a screenshot of a Hyper Scan being done in 2.1.8 Note the absence of the rootkit phase even though "scan for rootkits" is enabled in the Detection and Protection settings. The update/patch is being rolled out gradually.
Can you be more specific? What are you using that is finding malware being missed by MBAM? I remove malware regularly as well and often use both Hitman Pro and MBAM. I find that they often detect the same serious malware (not the same PUPs necessarily). I would add that PUPs are not harmless; they often cripple performance.
I had to re-enter my lifetime license after the upgrade to 2.1.7; not sure why that was necessary, but it wasn't a problem.
AdwCleaner & Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) often find serious stuff where MBAM only found PUPs. By the way. I always look through all findings before taking any action, and I am yet to see a PUP found by MBAM that is worth worrying about. Yes, I have read that the JRT developer, Thisisu has just been hired by Malwarebytes and they also bought the program, so maybe Malwarebytes may make up the ground they lost over the last few years.
Just to clear up the updating process for us. Our users have NOT become guinea pigs, let me make that clear. We are simply testing our update throttling system. Why? Because when we push an update out, 5 million computer pick it up within the first hour. Hypothetically speaking, if we ever had a bug in the software that was severe, we certainly would not want to let it propagate that far, that fast. We are pushing out updates from 2.1.6 and older to 2.1.8 at a capped rate of 100,000 per hour and we're disabling it at night when our support team has hit the hay. By the end of the week, we should be opening it even wider. 2.1.7 is no longer being served due to an issue with a crash on scanning a few specific pieces of software. It made it to 50,000 users and we had 10 reports. More importantly, it never showed up in 4 weeks of testing. Now you know why we throttle
"Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) v2.1.7.1055 has been released 16-June-2015" "We are pushing out updates from 2.1.6 and older to 2.1.8 at a capped rate of 100,000 per hour" Today is June 24 and I'm still in 2.1.6 Premium version. June 24 - June 16 = 8 days. 100.000 per hour x 24 hours = 2.400.000 per day 8 days x 2.400.000 per day = 19.200.000 customers Question: How many customers (paid version, not the free one) do you have?
2.1.7 was released June 16th but was taken down for 3 days. We've only been pushing out 2.1.8 since the 19th (4 days!) and at a much more limited number than 100,000 per hour. As of this message, the upgrades are off for the evening. We migrated about 500,000 users today, free and paid. If you'd like the latest build, you can message me for a link. We'll be much more comfortable by the end of the week pushing the new version out fully, it is showing to be very stable.
