I didn't reply because you found a way to solve your issue. If you noticed, the option to start with windows is grayed out because you had the option to run in the background disabled. In this scenario, SAS will not start with windows.

Ah, but it did! I uninstalled Norton temporarily, rebooted and SAS popped up as soon as my I had logged into Windows.

Ever since the update to SAS v6 and this program has gone downhill when it comes to updates. I have the latest version yet everytime I start SAS it tells me there is a upgrade update, so I hit update then it says no update......what the hell is this! someone fix this mess!

This issue is generally caused by a user erroneously disabling the !SASCore service. The program requires this service to function properly. Check to make sure you have not accidentally disabled this service.

Right, that fixed it, although I never had an issue disabling it in the past but thank you :)

    Thank you Mops21. :thumb:

However the SAS product release history page though continues to be a study in untimely vagueness.

The SAS folks may as well copy & paste this product release description into the next update for what it's worth..

    Pity.

As usual, no change log. SAS staff only release the change log after about a week or so. Very unprofessional and still bundling spyware with it (Google Chrome)

oh I know it's useless, but I only use it to remove tracking cookies. don't you think that's worth it?

When Norton Security scans for tracking cookies, it barely finds 25% of what SAS finds

    No. Not worth it.

Using a security app for cookies that puts hooks and tentacles in your system is dramatic overkill. Especially for a product that is completely worthless.

Plus, a security pro like yourself should be embarrassed to have SAS on your system. Something rated "DISMAL" at PCMag.com should not be on your computer.

    It's garbage.

For cookies, try ccleaner or Slimcleaner.

Thank you bro. I now feel ashamed. Uninstalling it right away from all my systems and deleting it.

I never trusted them with bundling Google Chrome! A security app with crapware. Now that it does anything about security

    LOL

Does the SAS Windows Service remain running after SAS is closed permanently? It's getting a tad annoying having to stop and disable this service after an on-demand scan...

    EDIT: Installed as portable...

I'm liking the direction this is going in. It's becoming more of a utility program than an out and out anti malware, but still.

I really like the way it can identify your most recent changes to temp files. I can't tell you how great this feature is. I had about five gigs of a Native Instruments Komplete install taking up space on my HD and I just couldn't find it anywhere. SAS took care of this, after a quick scan it pointed me to the offending folders and I quickly recovered about 4/5 gigs off my hard drive. Very nice indeed.

Also, I must say that I got a particularly offensive drive by the other day after going to Cobian Backup's site. He is of very high repute and not the sort of person you would expect to get 'hacked' but he did and after going there it took me 8 hours to clean the infection. Thankfully SAS alerted me to this problem. It was the browser hijack that did it. Of course SAS protects your home page and alerts you if it changed. Winpatrol Plus also has this feature, but did not alert me in this instance.

WSA was totally on the case and didn't even alert me - it just went right ahead and cleaned the nasty of my system. The 8 hours I spent cleaning up was house work really, I dread to think what would have happened if I a: had not had WSA to clean the infection on sight, and b: SAS to alert me to the fact I was infected. I had a backup from the night before and thought it would be easy to clean, but it was one of those that you don't know how deep it runs until you try cleaning it and rescanning etc.

I'm not sure I would recommend SAS as a first or second line scanner for malware, but as a third or fourth line of defense, and especially as a great all round utility, I would say it is essential. It does stuff that no other program I have does. It lost its way for a while, but this program is back with a vengeance.
I also like how it catches nearly all of the bad cookies and trackers. That is a nice touch as well and well worth the money. I got two licenses when it was going cheap. The other resides on my folk's computer. I'm going to take advantage of the remote option later when I get a bit more time.

All in all I'm very impressed with this program and just felt it needed a little bit of defending. I know it has had some bad press around here, but I will just say this, and I don't mean it as an insult, I use this program as a fifth or sixth opinion scanner. It is lowest down the chain. But if MBAM and HM Pro and WSA and Emsisoft all come back good, I will run this just as a final test to make sure.

However, on a badly infected machine, you will find this program to be a very good first line of defense and will clean the nastiest stuff. I have used it more than once as a disinfectant. Yes, it's not so great at detection, but when a system is riddled with malware, it does a very good job of cleaning up.

Disclaimer: I paid for my license and get no free stuff at all from SAS. This testimonial is totally unsolicited.

No not the 1st choice i admit, but it does include some very useful tools for resetting some of the PC's settings that malware can change/block. Many users would be stuck knowing how to get them back.
