The type of install is a matter of preference. For many users an "in place upgrade" is the easier choice since they don't have the skills to do a clean install. In any case it looks like an in place upgrade is initially necessary, and a clean install becomes possible after the system is activated.

That is what worries me about the "free upgrade" What happens if the RTM version of windows 10 is still bug ridden or the forced updates end up borking systems? From that blog post the answer seems to be that you can't go back to windows 8.1 as the licence will be converted to windows 10. I really hop the MS have a site when 10 launches that you can enter a valid licence for windows 8 pro & get the upgrade that way. I would rather lose the windows 8 pro key than windows 8.1 key.

    I think Microsoft needs to
either transfer all options/settings from Control Panel to Settings
or transfer all options/settings from Settings to Control Panel.

Having both Control Panel and Settings is unnecessary.

I prefer all options/settings to be found in Control Panel. :thumb:

I agree, the current hybrid approach on Win 8 doesn't make any sense.

In the current beta has anyone checked --

Is Windows Update listed in Services? Can it be disabled? If it can, does the disabled setting 'stick' after re-boot?

    Thank you.

WOW, Based on several things in this tread, I am seriously rethinking taking Microsoft up on this "free" upgrade offer. Especially after reading the link referenced in niki's post above.

I've just installed build 1030, by upgrading from Windows 8. Since, I was unable to upgrade to Windows 8.1, I decided to jump in and upgrade to Windows 10, since from what I read you will be able to upgrade to the RTM version from the preview.

So far, it's running really well, after setting my touchpad software to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode. I still hate the new start menu, and may replace in in time if I don't get used to it. I'm not having any DPC latency (audio) issues as of yet, which is important for me, as audio issues would lead me to switch back to Windows 7.

I've got Comodo Programs Manager working to monitor all software installations. Lenovo System Update does not work properly with Windows 10 (it seems to think I'm running Vista), but I installed driver updates with both System Update and Lenovo Drivers Managment before upgrading to Windows 10.

I am going to transfer most of my apps from my broken Windows 7 install in time with PCMover, which may or not break Windows, time will tell.

Yes, it's listed, and you will be able to disable it. In the old preview build I was using it would get renabled from time to time, which was annoying. However, since in my new install of build 10130, I am now able to run Modern Apps and therefore can actually open Windows Update, I have no need to disable it.

    Roger,

How did you open Windows Update?

@Brian K Are you referring to my new install of Windows 10? If so, I open it by entering wuapp in the Run (Windows key + R) dialogue box. In Widwos 8 that would bring up the traditional Windows Update window, but of course in Windows 10, there only is the Metro app for Windows Update.

Thanks. I misunderstood and thought you had found a way to choose the old "Never check for Updates".

No, if it finds updates it automatically downloads them. I don't know how optional updates like drivers are handled.

It's a shame you can no longer run the traditional not Metro/Modern Win 7/Vista style Windows Update like you could in 8 and 8.1

I wasn't suggesting anything. I provided info that might help fill in a blank for @roger_m 's --

    Understood. :)

OK, the question for all, do you suggest to turn on the automatic MS update of drivers or not?

For the majority of users, yes, absolutely. But there are some use cases where I have seen some users needing to turn driver update off. These were cases where some users had 2 GPU's. And any other use cases were probably gaming related as well where users wanted to use specific graphics drivers for very specific reasons.

Perhaps you have a false impression of me. I'm only a little more knowledgeable than a basic user. I've had good results from simply being careful, patient and not click-happy. No illegal downloads, stay away from dodgy sites, completely vetting any program I might need, etc, etc. I'm sure you know the routine.

With that in mind - Other than an AV (sparingly), I don't auto-update anything. Unless absolutely necessary, I don't download any driver updates from MS. Almost all the driver updates, that I'd determined I really needed, have been available at the vendor's site. I think, over the years, there's been a couple available only at WU.

You'll have to decide what's best for your habits.

    Worth reading this article: http://www.howtogeek.com/219166/you...pdates-on-windows-10-home/?PageSpeed=noscript
Now all doubt has been taken away so I will definitely stay with Win 7 as long as I can.
