I'm glad to hear that your setup is behaving nicely now. I am a big fan of individual layered security programs as opposed to big security suites and so on, so I like your way of thinking. I think that I should probably experiment more with Secure Folders as well since I see lots of great things being said about it. But I am not entirely familiar with ACL (access control links) yet and I prefer to understand how things work first. So I will probably do a bit of research on that and then give Secure Folders another try.

I would pay good money for an updated x64 bit driver for EQSysSecure. I wonder if they partitioned off the source or sold it complete. That was one helluva classical HIPS that with Wilder's member Alcyon's rulesets made it as bulletproof as a HIPS could possible get without regular program updates. Oh those chinese teasers. Grrrr. No fun at all.

Same with Malware Defender. Similar story.

i've used the free version for a year or so - i think it could be used as an alternative to noscript if website content could be disabled by default - too bad. it doesn't block adds imbedded in video as well as ublock, but i use them both - i saw this suggested somewhere as either one on their own doesn't block anywhere close to 100%

Thanks, but suddenly the issue disappeared. If it happens again, I will certainly follow your suggestion...

That is a decent setup and you may not necessarily need anything else depending on your usage. The only additions that I would suggest as a possibility would be an anti-exploit layer (Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free or EMET) and/or an anti-executable layer (VoodooShield, NVT ERP, Software Restriction Policies, or Bouncer). Whether you add one or both of these layers would depend on your use case, your preferences and what direction you like to take your security setup.

using panda antivirus currently but im using but looking for something new, also im finding the same slow scanning result with avira,im going on to say 21 percent for over 5 hrs of scanning time using avira.

ive been switching off using the one of those either panda or avira at the moment.

is there anything out there that is free and a antivirus i should look into for desktop??

any answers would be greatly welcome.

and another thing i do alot of torrent downloading mainly movies and music.

What happened with SpyShelter, didn't you like it?

BTW, you were right, File Change Alarm works just fine on Win 8.

paid version includes a VPN service in addition to the free features which is primarily a script blocker - the scripts are grouped into categories which makes it much easier to use then Noscript.

my setup is Noscript - Disconnect - uBlock

i surf with all scripts blocked with Noscript & most websites work fine like this. But if the website function breaks & allowing the 1st party domain in Noscript doesn't fix it then instead of trying to debug in Noscript i "global allow all" scripts and let Disconnect block everything except the content needed for the site to function - uBlock is there to catch all the stuff Disconnect misses. This setup seems to work well, but like i said above if Disconnect would allow their 'Content' group to be blocked by default then Noscript could be left on 'global allow all' or not used at all.

I keep checking to see if that "Looking For A New x64 Classical HIPS" gets changed :) or @Cutting_Edgetech "online armor since"...etc. I'm still using Online Armor free for now - i don't see another good free/cheap option or combination of options other then Comodo which i haven't tried, but am sure i'll be disappointed with after using OA... A few good options for AEs (NVT, Voodooshield...) and for outbound firewall (Windows Firewall Control), but not for hips/BB - unless someone has something to suggest (Win 7 64-bit)?

Isn't the majority of the functionality of Spyshelter premium covered with a few freebies - EMET, Zemana AL(free) or Trusteer Raport, HMP.A(free), sure add Sandboxie(free) too... i've looked at Spyshelter a few times, but for the $$ the functionality looks way too limited - am i missing something?

I've just done a clean install of Windows 7, and am running WSA, due to good detection rates and being very light.

For the moment that's the only security software I'm running. I have disabled Windows Defender.

Are there tests on WSA's detection rates?

I've just ditched WSA as it seemed to making web browsers less responsive. For some unknown reason security software almost always causes a noticable negative impact on system performance.

Right now, I've got no security software installed, and have also removed Windows Defender as I never use it.

I think it depends on the type of security software. WSA tries to take control over the whole machine, because it's trying to monitor so much stuff. For example, EXE Radar and Sandboxie don't seem to cause any slowdown at all. Anti-exploit can also cause unexpected problems, because they integrate quite deeply into memory. I'm currently investigating if MBAE is causing CPU spikes on certain websites.
